Pain relief

Pain relief Pain relief through functional neurology muscle testing to find imbalances in the body where pain is Hi I'm Shannon! Body. Balance. What is the B3 technique?

I've been teaching Pilates for going on 10 years and started my manual release journey in 2018 when I found a book on Trigger point release. This opened the wonderful world of fascia and how absolutely amazing it is and how it is often over looked. In 2019 I attended a Functional Neurology course with Brain. and my way of looking at the human body, movement and pain, changed. In 2020 (lock down) I went on to do and complete the Muscle Activation course and 2021 I will be taking on the Advance course to become a B3 practitioner. When our bodies present us with pain, we need to interpret these pain signals as a sign that there is a dysfunction present. Normally the body self regulates. But sometimes, especially with consistent bad habits and compensation the body needs a little help to regulate. We use functional neurology muscle testing to accurately pinpoint the muscles that are in dysfunction. With gentle manual pressure we stimulate the connective tissue called fascia, around the muscles that are over used, signaling the nervous system to relax and heal the area. And with neurokinesis
exercises we retrain the underutilized muscles, to activate better movement patterns. I look forward to helping you interpret your pain signals!

Female client in her 40's booked a pain relief session for neck, upper back and right shoulder pain.

First session 03/01/2022:
*Reaching 7/10 burning pain and 8/10 aching pain.
*Client was in a car accident in Aug 2021, where someone bumped her car from behind which resulted in whiplash injury.
*I followed a whiplash protocol for pain relief and released all rotator cuff muscles.
*Sent home with an exercise to activate external rotators of the arm and postural awareness for sleeping on her side.

Follow up session 12/01/2022:
Feedback
*Burning and aching pain has gone down to 3/10 and 4/10.
*With muscle testing we found the right upper trapezius was over working for an inhibited right QL (lower back muscle).
Right sternocleidomastoid was also over compensating for an inhibited right psoas (lower back and hip flexor).
And right supraspinatus was overworking for an inhibited deltoid.
*We released all over-compensating muscles and client was sent home with re-training exercises for the inhibited muscles.

04/02/2022
Feedback
Neck and shoulder much better but pain has moved into her arm.

Second follow up session 04/02/2022:
*We found a dysfunctional relationship between the right supraspinatus (inhibited) and middle deltoid (over compensating).
*We released the middle deltoid and client was sent home to retrain the supraspinatus.
*Because the pain seems to flare with stress, client was also taught how to do proper diaphragm breathing for relaxation.

Conclusion:
The client is pain free to date and wrote a beautiful review on your website:

Female client, late 30's. Car accident many years ago resulted in right femur head needing to be shortened for a hip replacement and right elbow to be fixed in place (elbow stays in a 45 degree angle). As you can imagine, these structural changes will cause imbalances and compensation through the body that will lead to discomfort, stiffness and pain.

Client specifically came in for Pain relief for pain between shoulder blades into right shoulder and neck. As well as numbness in right glute and sciatic nerve type pain down right leg.

First session on 14/04/2021
*We focused on releasing all the over compensating muscles.
*Sent home with mobility exercises for stiff and tight areas.

Feedback on 15/04/2021
"Thought I'd let you know that I had the most pain free night of sleep last night that I can ever remember having"

Follow up session 17/05/2021
*We proceeded with muscle testing to more specifically pinpoint what muscles are over compensating and what muscles are not firing to their full potential.
*A relationship was found between the lower back muscles (over working) and the glute muscle (not working enough). As well as a dysfunctional relationship between the right and left glute, possibly caused by the femur length discrepancy.
*We released the over compensating muscles and retrained the underutilized muscle.
*Client does regular Pilates and we discussed variations for certain postures to accommodate for fixed elbow.

Feedback 13/07/2021
*All discomfort and pain has improved and exercise regime intensified without any repercussions.
Feedback 27/08/2021
*Muscle pain so much better.
Feedback 14/11/2021
"Body is feeling great!"

Conclusion:
Even though I would've liked to have seen the client for another session, the client became aware of the postural variations she needed to adopt for her body to accept the structural changes. One release session and one muscle testing session was all this client needed to understand her body better :)

65 year old female battling with consistent pain around left shoulder/scapula area for going on 30 years. Met a B3 practitioner while on holiday and found me once back in PE.

10/01/2022
Feedback: client had immediate relief from previous session.
With muscle testing we found the clients chest muscles were over working and the clients mid back muscles were not working enough. We also found the TA (deep abdominal muscle) was not activating.

After a thorough release session, the client was sent home with TA and pelvic floor retraining as well as mid back retraining.

To date the client is pain free! She partakes in weekly Pilates classes as part of her "body maintenance " program.

*Even if you have been living with pain for years, it does not mean you have to continue living with pain*

60 year old female, started with front and upper legs stiffness and weakness, as well as aching outer thighs in mid April 2021. The discomfort most probably brought on by walking more often (which of course should not happen).

23 June 2021
Through muscle testing we found that the clients TFL (bi-lateral) was not activating. By stimulating the clients caesarean scar tissue, the Right TFL activated. The left TFL was being inhibited by a tight left glute minimus.
We continued by releasing left QL and right Psoas and retraining the opposite to counter a slight rotation of the clients pelvis. Client was sent home with a bit of homework.

21 July 2021
Feedback: 1 week after treatment much better. Left leg feeling better than right. But started with left knee discomfort.
Again a connection was found between TFL and glutes. But there was also a dysfunctional relationship between right and left glute. Client was sent home and advised to release left glute max and retrain right glute max with a few other exercises.

20 August 2022
Feedback: pain flared after treatment, but with doing the homework the pain subsided to the point of being able to walk and climb stairs with no pain.
*The client felt like the legs were not yet 100% better. A lower back twinge had also become apparent.

Right glute max was still not activating and we found a connection with the left lumbar extensors. The client was sent home with an exercise to retrain her lower back muscles.

***To date the client has no leg discomfort. The client still walks everyday, practices yoga and Pilates and feels great!

This case is a wonderful example of years of compensation from scar tissue that only revealed it self once activity was increased.

You are NOT getting old! We just need to find why your body is compensating😁💪

Female client, 39 years of age, regular headaches and migraines that start with neck pain. Specifically came for pain relief because of a very bad mid to upper back spasm and deltoid pain on 20 October 2020. After a thorough neck and upper back release session (and sent home with instructions to take a week break from exercise), client to date is still headache and migraine free. 😁

Female client 48 years of age. Diagnosed spondylolisthesis. Numbing pain in left leg and severe pain when moving and aching lower back. Client started with treatment on 21 May 2020. On 5 October 2020 the client wrote a beautiful review on my booking website stating to be pain free: https://bendpilates.simplybook.me/v2/

With structural damage, maintenance is necessary. We used a combo of Pain relief technique, re training exercises and Pilates. The client dedicated her self to once a week sessions.

I'm proud to say this client is still going strong with her once a week Pilates sessions!

Case study:
50 year old male with L5/S1 herniated disc. Left hamstring pain and numbness. Pain under right scapula with certain movements.
Results after one session: No more hamstring pain!

About a month later the pain moved to the clients lower back (When pain moves, it is often a good sign. This helps me find the underlying cause for compensation). The pain under the right scapula now refers to shoulder and elbow. (Another clue to the real cause of discomfort).
Result of second session: Completely pain free!

*I do have to note that this client was very good at doing his homework retraining exercises. And was also doing Pilates at the time.

Case study:
33 year old female with perpetual lower back pain, hip pain and shoulder pain when weight baring or lifting arms above head.
Three sessions of pain relief over three months resulted in back pain 60% better, hip pain almost non existent and can now do weight baring exercises without pain in shoulders.
**Hip pain was almost non existent and shoulder strength increased after first session.

Case study:
36 year old male with neck discomfort/stiffness that leads to tension headaches and bi-lateral shoulder pain.
Four sessions of pain relief over 3 months resulted in no more tension headaches, relief of shoulder pain and better neck and shoulder mobility. In Pilates the client has better shoulder stability and abdominal activation. **Extra bonus: Arm muscle are developing as a result of recruiting correct muscles while exercising, instead of neck muscles.

What happens in a pain relief session? In this case, lots of trapezius and back extensor release. Then some glute and QL release. Psoas testing that resulted in right Psoas release and left Psoas retraining.

A HUGE thank you to all my Pilates clients who so graciously let me practice and experiment on them with this fantastic technique! Covid threw quite a curve ball but I am forever thankful that because of the spare time I had I was able to do the Muscle Activation course through Brain.Body.Balance. This has opened a whole new world for me and I am now confidently booking clients for pain relief sessions. Forever a student I will be starting with the Advance course to become a B3 practitioner as soon as possible😁💪
