Surgeons have performed the first-ever whole-eye transplant on a military veteran who lost his eye during an electrical accident.

Forty-six-year-old Aaron James was left severely injured after touching a live wire, which damaged the left side of his face, nose, and left eye.

James has started to recover after a surgical team at NYU Langone performed a partial face transplant, although he has not regained his sight.

Before James' surgery, doctors had only ever been able to transplant the cornea of the eye.
