"man is not truly one, but truly two."
- Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Workplace bullying is a deeply complex and often hidden issue, extending far beyond simple negative behavior. It's a systemic problem rooted in the underlying dynamics between three fundamental aspects: the bully, the victim, and the broader organizational culture (White 2004). One of the key psychological defense mechanisms at play is splitting, a concept that helps us understand why these situations can be so destructive and persistent. Splitting is the unconscious tendency to see people or situations as all good or all bad, an inability to hold conflicting feelings- like love and hate- at the same time.

Workplace bullying isn't just a linear case of a person in power picking on a subordinate. It’s a complex, unconscious dynamic that often involves powerful psychological defense mechanisms. One of the most significant of these is projection, where an individual attributes their own unacceptable thoughts, feelings, or impulses to someone else. In a bullying scenario, projection becomes the tool that allows the bully to offload their inner turmoil onto a victim. “The bully and the victim are psychically intertwined as if in a frenetic and parasitic dance” (Cilliers 2012, p.4).

Every couple faces a fundamental challenge: navigating the delicate balance between intimacy and individuality. While we crave the deep emotional bond of a partnership, we must also maintain a secure sense of self, with our own thoughts, feelings, and identity. This tension is normal, but for some, the need for connection can become a fear of separateness, leading to confusion and a frustrating feeling that only “one person” exists in the relationship. This experience may also create a sense of fusion that makes it difficult to tell where one partner ends and the other begins. These couples aren’t coming together to build a relationship; they are coming together to avoid one, because true relationships require the courageous recognition that you and your partner are, in fact, two separate people (Morgan, 2018).

Have you ever wondered why we sometimes adopt the very behaviours we've experienced from a difficult boss, a harsh critic, or a challenging situation? This phenomenon has deep roots in psychology, particularly in a defense mechanism known as "identification with the aggressor" (Freud 1961, p.363). The child who is humiliated learns to humiliate. The individual who is micromanaged tends to micromanage others. In essence, by becoming the aggressor, we reclaim a sense of power and control, turning our victimhood into an act of strength.
