As 2023 closes, 2024 brings hope, love and light!

The parents, babies, children, nurses, doctors and other health professionals that we have had the fortune of interacting with, are all truly amazing. Every single one of them brought something into our role of being a/their dietitian. Each year that passes brings new challenges and interesting cases. We learn new literature and grow within our profession. We develop within our roles as dietitians but also as mothers to our own children. Thank you for trusting us and choosing us to be part of your nutritional journey.

We would like to commend all parents for being your child’s number one! For showing up, doing your best and for loving your little one! Parenting is hard, there is no job quite like it and nothing can prepare you to become a mom or a dad. We encourage you to LOVE , DREAM, ask questions and most importantly forgive. Let 2024 be your year! Surround yourselves with a positive support group of friends and family. After all it takes a village to raise a child 😀. May this year be a healthy and happy one for you all!

Much love Robyn and Michele

What a privilege it was to be invited to, and a part of, such an informative event!
Invaluable knowledge by all the presenters, and very blessed to work alongside such a brilliant team of individuals. A special shout out to Robyn Rose Potgieter for presenting on “prioritising nutrition in the preterm infant” and for spreading our passion for these tiny humans 💜 .

Are you a coffee drinker? No judgement- I sure am. Like seriously, do NOT talk to me before I've had my first cup of coffee! (For your safety and mine! 😅)

Parents of newborns are up all night- for some of you folks, coffee is an essential tool for the day. But there's so many different things that says "a nursing parent CANNOT drink coffee or anything with caffeine!"

But you know what? According to the National Library of Medicine (aka LactMed) there is "Insufficient high-quality data available to make good evidence-based recommendations on safe maternal caffeine consumption."

Now, this doesn't mean I'm telling you to go guzzle down 15 cups of coffee and 4 cokes! No way! First of all you'd spend your entire day in the bathroom. Drinking caffeine is OKAY, but only in moderations! Let's pick a safe number, more like 4ish cups of coffee a day.

"A... intake limit of 300 to 500 mg daily might be a safe level of intake for most {lactating people}. However, preterm and younger newborn infants metabolize caffeine very slowly and may have serum levels of caffeine and other active caffeine metabolites similar to their {parent's} levels, so a lower intake level is preferable in the {nursing parent} of these infants. Other sources of caffeine, such as cola and energy drinks, yerba mate or guarana, will have similar dose-related effects on the breastfed infant. Coffee intake of more than 450 mL daily may decrease breastmilk iron concentrations and result in mild iron deficiency anemia in some breastfed infants."

So go ahead! Grab that Iced Chocolate Almond milk Shaken Espresso. You deserve it! 😉
