It was a privilege to attend the fundraising lunch for Aurora Special Care & Stimulation Centre and to witness the heart behind the work being done in our community.

Listening to insights from economist Dawie Roodt, reminded me that while economic realities shape our country, it is strong social support systems that truly sustain our people.

Organisations like Aurora are not just service providers - they are safe spaces, lifelines, and pillars of hope for vulnerable individuals and families.

Now more than ever, recognising the value of social care - and actively supporting it - matters.

If youโ€™re able to contribute, partner, or simply amplify their work, please do. Sustainable communities are built when we all take responsibility for one another. ๐Ÿ’š

Mental health is not a luxury.
It is not weakness.
It is not โ€œjust a phase.โ€

It is our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It shapes how we think, how we cope with stress, how we relate to others, and how we make decisions every single day.

Something deeply troubling and heart breaking is happening in our schools, and has been for a long time - and it goes far beyond classroom mischief. A recent report shows that too many of our children are living through violence and fear where they should be learning and growing.

๐Ÿ“Œ Around 3.2 million learners in SA experience bullying every year - nearly double the global average. Many never speak up because they fear they wonโ€™t be believed, or nothing will be done.

๐Ÿ’” Some stories are heartbreaking - learners choosing not to go to school to avoid being harmed; others dealing with anxiety, depression, or even thoughts of su***de.

๐Ÿ“ This isnโ€™t just โ€œkids being kidsโ€. Bullying reflects a society where violence has sadly become normalised - in homes, communities, and sometimes even in schools.

But there is both a legal responsibility and a moral duty to act:

๐Ÿ“˜ Under the South African Schools Act, every school must:
โœ”๏ธ Create and implement a learner code of conduct that forbids bullying
โœ” Establish disciplinary and safety committees to respond to incidents
โœ” Support a safe learning environment where children are protected from ill-discipline and violence

This means that more should be done than just punish. We need to build cultures of respect, care, and accountability - where learners feel safe to speak up, where adults take action, and where support is available for both victims and those who hurt others.

๐ŸŽ—๏ธ Every child deserves to feel safe, valued and respected.
No learner should ever fear going to school. Not in South Africa. Not anywhere.

The school bullying crisis mirrors a society where violence is normalised, and parents and teachers play an important role.
