POTCHEFSTROOM HOSPITAL CATARACT MARATHON

Day two of the Cataract Marathon concluded today at Potchefstroom Hospital, where healthcare professionals continued with a dedicated campaign to assist nearly 70 patients who took part in the marathon.

Building on yesterday’s session, Dr Charles Echelu, Head of the Ophthalmology Department, unpacked what an effective cataract marathon should look like, including a clear understanding of the responsibilities that come with eye care. All healthcare providers are expected to align with established protocols that safeguard patients and ensure positive health outcomes. These tools guarantee that eye care services delivered remain ethical and clinically sound.

“The support displayed by management is an acknowledgement of the difference that the Eye Clinic is making to the community. This clinic has really put Potchefstroom Hospital on the map. We report on this Cataract Marathon to further boost the reputation of the hospital,” said Dr Michael Shakung, Acting CEO.

Through strengthened planning by the cataract team and continued support from hospital management, the programme aims to improve the quality and consistency of healthcare services provided to patients throughout JB Marks. This collective approach symbolises Potchefstroom Hospital’s commitment to addressing sight challenges and bringing essential eye care services closer to the community.

This initiative forms part of the Ophthalmology Department’s annual campaigns.

In an effort to turn sage care into best experiences, Potchefstroom Hospital, in partnership with the North West University and the National Research Foundation, held the Patient Safety Seminar at the Residence Hall today, 06 August 2025.

“When we talk about ‘best experiences’, it is easy to think about hospitality. Yet the truth is, no experience can be called the best if it is not first and foremost safe. Safety is the foundation upon which trust, dignity, and excellence are built,” Dr. Petronella Lunda said.

Patient safety is the prevention of errors and adverse events associated with healthcare. It is about ensuring that patients are not harmed while receiving medical care.

“Patient safety emphasizes systems and processes that reduce risks, prevent mistakes, and create a culture of learning and continuous improvement,” Dr. Lunda concluded.

STATE-OF-THE-ART MAMMOGRAM MACHINE AT POTCH HOSPITAL

Potchefstroom Hospital in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District has once again taken a stand to be the facility of choice and a beacon of hope for quality patient care in the North West Province. This follows the installation of a brand-new mammogram machine to the tune of R4,780,798.78.

The FUJIFILM machine is a state-of-the-art device and the first of its kind in South Africa. It is now installed at the Potchefstroom Hospital CT Scan Unit.

“Mammogram is an exam used to detect breast cancer early and to identify abnormalities before symptoms appear. This can also assist in improving treatment outcomes and survival rates,” said Chief Radiographer, Ms. Olga Sekwati.

Breast cancer incidence is increasing, with 1 in 30 South African women at risk. It is important for women to schedule regular breast cancer screening tests to detect the disease at an early stage. Risk factors include family history, lifestyle, and genetic predisposition.

“Patients from Potchefstroom Hospital have been referred to Tshepong Hospital for mammogram examinations. The waiting period for bookings was very long, which caused delays in patient management due to the long list at Tshepong Hospital,” Ms. Sekwati concluded.

Risks associated with the long waiting period include:
1. Patients’ conditions may become advanced before proper diagnosis.
2. There may be metastasis due to delays.
3. Patients could pass away before a doctor can make a proper diagnosis.

The new mammogram machine was installed at Potchefstroom Hospital in May 2025 and is operated by a qualified mammographer, Ms. Tshegofatso Tsikwe. The department uses a booking system for referred patients.

Patients should consult at the Surgical OPD, where they will be seen by a doctor. If needed, the doctor will make an appointment with the X-Ray Department.

Working hours for mammogram services are from 07h30 to 16h00, only on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Ward 5 team from Potchefstroom Hospital united again to observe World Prematurity Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about infants born prematurely and the difficulties they face. This year's theme is "Over 13 million babies born prematurely every year. Access to quality care everywhere!" highlights the stark global disparities in healthcare and calls for universal access to high-quality care for preterm babies, regardless of their birth circumstances or location. Preterm birth remains the leading cause of death for children under five, and many who survive face lifelong disabilities due to inadequate healthcare. It is estimated that 13.4 million babies born prematurely worldwide every year. The theme of World Prematurity Day 2024 is a call for urgent action to close the healthcare gap, advocating for better maternal and neonatal care worldwide.
