🛡️RSV Breakthrough: New Protection for South African Babies in 2026!

We have some incredibly positive news to share! RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) has long been a leading cause of lung infections in infants, but as of early 2026, we have two powerful new tools available right here in South Africa to protect our little ones.

After years of local clinical trials, these treatments have moved from "experimental" to "available." Here is what you need to know:

1. The Maternal Vaccine (Abrysvo)🤰
This is a single dose given to pregnant moms (ideally between weeks 28 and 36).

How it works: You develop antibodies that pass to your baby, giving them "passive immunity" from the moment they are born.

The Impact: It has been shown to be over 80% effective at preventing severe RSV infections in a baby’s first 90 days.

Status: Available now in the private sector, with recommendations for a public sector rollout currently underway!

2. The Infant "One-and-Done" Shield (Beyfortus)👶
Registered by SAHPRA in January 2026, this is a game-changer for the current RSV season.

How it works: It isn't a traditional vaccine; it’s a long-acting antibody that provides "ready-made" protection directly to the infant.

The Benefit: Unlike older treatments that required monthly shots, this is a single injection that protects your baby for at least five months, covering the entire RSV season!

Who is it for? It’s designed for all infants entering their first RSV season, not just those at high risk.

Why this matters to our community:
RSV season in South Africa typically kicks off around February/March. With these new options, we can significantly reduce hospital visits and keep our babies breathing easier.

🩺Are you pregnant or have a newborn?
Let’s discuss which of these options is right for your family during your next visit. Protecting our smallest patients is our biggest priority!

On this World Down Syndrome Day, we are proud to launch a new initiative focused on strengthening the support systems for our patients and their families.

Aligned with the 2026 global theme, "Together Against Loneliness," we are highlighting the vital importance of connection and inclusion. As a paediatric practice, we see firsthand that when we prioritize community and bridge gaps in social inclusion, we create better health outcomes for our children. Let’s work together to ensure no family feels isolated on this journey.🤝

💧 Small Kidneys, Big Job: World Kidney Day 2026
Today, March 12th, we celebrate World Kidney Day! 🩺✨

While we often think of kidney health as an "adult issue," the foundations for healthy kidneys are laid in childhood. These two bean-shaped powerhouses work hard every day to filter waste, balance fluids, and keep your child’s body running smoothly.

How can we protect young kidneys?
Focusing on these three simple habits to keep those "filters" in top shape:

💧 Hydration is Heroic: Encourage your children to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Pure water is always the best choice over sugary juices or sodas.

🍎 Watch the Salt: High salt intake can put extra strain on developing kidneys. Focus on fresh, whole foods and limit processed snacks.

🏃‍♂️ Keep Moving: Physical activity helps maintain a healthy blood pressure, which is vital for long-term kidney health.

When should you talk to us?
If you notice frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs), changes in urine color/odor, or unusual swelling in your child’s face or ankles, it’s always worth a check-up.

Early awareness leads to a lifetime of health! Let's give our children the best start possible. 💙

Baby Diarrhoea: A Parent’s Guide to What’s Normal and When to Call the Practice 🩺👶

Dealing with diarrhoea is never fun, especially when it’s your little one. It’s one of the most common reasons parents reach out to us, so we wanted to share some quick guidance on how to spot the difference between "normal tummy trouble" and when it’s time for a check-up.

What’s "Normal"?
Every baby is different! Sometimes, a looser stool is just a result of a change in diet, teething, or a mild tummy bug. If your baby is happy, playful, and, most importantly, staying hydrated, it’s often something that clears up on its own with time and TLC.

Signs It’s Time to Call our Practice:
We are always here to help. Please reach out if you notice any of the following:

▶️Signs of Dehydration: Fewer wet diapers than usual, a sunken soft spot (fontanelle) on the head, or no tears when crying.
▶️Persistent Fever: Especially in very young infants.
▶️Blood or Mucus: If you notice blood or significant mucus in their stool.
▶️Excessive Lethargy: If your baby seems unusually tired, difficult to wake, or is not interested in feeding.
▶️Duration: If the diarrhoea lasts longer than 24–48 hours or is severe/frequent.

How to help them at home:
The biggest priority is hydration. Continue breastfeeding or formula feeding as usual, and follow your doctor’s advice regarding oral rehydration solutions if needed. Avoid sugary juices or sports drinks, as these can make it worse!

We’re here for you!💙
If you’re ever in doubt or just feel like something isn’t right, don't hesitate to give us a call. It’s always better to be safe and get the expert advice you need to put your mind at ease: 012 549 8900 / office@gjmw.co.za for advice and care.

👁️ What is Glaucoma? A Quick Guide for Parents
You might have heard of glaucoma as an "adult" eye condition, but did you know it’s important for parents to understand, too?

What is it? In simple terms, glaucoma is a condition that damages the eye's optic nerve, the vital link between your eye and your brain. It is often caused by a buildup of pressure inside the eye.

Why does it matter to parents?
▶️The "Silent Thief": In adults, it often has no warning signs until vision is already affected.
▶️Rare in Children: While uncommon, childhood (congenital) glaucoma can happen. Early detection is key to protecting your little one’s sight!
▶️Watch for Signs: In infants, keep an eye out for excessive tearing, extreme light sensitivity, or a cloudy appearance to the eye.

The Bottom Line:
Your child’s vision is precious. While glaucoma is rare in kids, it is a reminder of why regular eye check-ups are a vital part of your child’s overall health routine.

🍂 Change of Seasons: Navigating Coughs and Colds 🤧
As the air turns crisp and the seasons shift, we often see a "spike" in little sneezes and scratchy throats. While coughs and colds are a normal part of childhood, knowing how to manage them makes the transition much smoother for the whole family!

👃What to expect:
Most seasonal respiratory infections are viral. You’ll likely see a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, a mild fever, and that persistent cough. The good news? Most cases are self-limiting and resolve within a week or two with some extra TLC at home.

🏠 Home Care Essentials:
🟧Hydration is Key: Keep the water, milk, or clear soups flowing!
🟧Rest Up: Give their little bodies the energy they need to fight the virus.
🟧Symptom Relief: Use age-appropriate, over-the-counter medications for comfort (always check the dosage with us if you’re unsure!).

🛡️ Staying One Step Ahead:
🟧Wash Your Hands: Good hand hygiene is the #1 defense.
🟧Seasonal Boost: Focus on vitamins through colorful fruits and veggies.
🟧Flu Vaccination: Now is the perfect time to ensure your child’s flu vaccine is up to date!

When to call us: 📱🩺
If your child has a high fever that won't come down, difficulty breathing, or if a cough lasts longer than 14 days, please book an appointment. We are here to help your little ones breathe easier!

💜Many Birth Defects, One Voice: World Birth Defects Day
Today, March 3rd, we join the global community to observe World Birth Defects Day.🌍

This year’s theme, “Many Birth Defects, One Voice,” reminds us that while these conditions are diverse, our mission is singular: to ensure every child, regardless of their start in life, has the support, care, and inclusion they deserve.

Birth defects remain a leading cause of neonatal mortality and childhood disability worldwide. However, awareness is the first step toward change.

Let's highlight three pillars of this day:

💜Prevention: Promoting healthy pregnancies through prenatal care, folic acid, and avoiding harmful substances.

💜Early Detection: Utilizing screenings to ensure interventions start as early as possible.

💜Lifelong Support: Standing in solidarity with families navigating these journeys, because Every Journey Matters.

Today, we raise our voices for better research, improved access to care, and a more inclusive world for our little warriors. Together, we can create a brighter, healthier future for every child. 🩺✨

🦻3 March - World Hearing Day 2026: Hearing Care for All Children
This year’s theme, “From communities to classrooms: hearing care for all children,” strikes a chord close to our hearts. 🩺✨

At our practice, we know that healthy hearing is the foundation for a child’s development, from their first words and social connections to their success in the classroom. When a child can hear clearly, they can engage fully with the world around them!

World Hearing Day 2026 is a vital reminder to:

🟪Prioritize Screenings: Early detection is the key to preventing long-term developmental delays.

🟪Protect Young Ears: Be mindful of loud environments and toy safety.

🟪Normalize Ear Care: Regular check-ups are just as important as dental or eye exams!

Let’s celebrate the precious gift of sound by ensuring no child is left behind due to preventable hearing loss.

🧏🏽‍♀️Is your child due for a check-up?
Early intervention starts with a simple screening.
Let’s work together to keep their world sounding bright!

Ready to let your little one take the lead at mealtime?🥑✨

Baby-led weaning (BLW) is an exciting milestone, but it’s normal to have questions about safety, nutrition, and let's be honest, the mess! We love seeing babies explore new textures and build confidence at the table.

Before you dive into the finger foods, remember the "Big Three":

1️⃣Wait for readiness (around 6 months and sitting well).
2️⃣Focus on soft textures (easily squished between your fingers).
3️⃣Always supervise.

Got a BLW recipe for the win or a funny "food hair" photo?

The Heart of Mindful Parenting🤍
Parenting isn't just about the big milestones, it's about the small, intentional moments we share every day. Here are four pillars of a mindful approach:

Practicing Intentional Presence⏲️
It’s more than just being in the same room. It’s about putting away the distractions and giving your child your full, undivided attention. Those few minutes of true connection build a lifetime of security.

Modeling the Behavior You Want to See✨
Children are like little mirrors; they don’t always do what we say, but they almost always do what we do. Leading by example is the most powerful teaching tool you have.

Honoring Their Individuality🌱
Every child is a unique "original." By stepping back and letting their true personality flourish, you give them the confidence to be exactly who they were meant to be.

Cultivating a Foundation of Affection🫂
A home filled with warmth, empathy, and consistent care creates a "safe harbor" for your child. When they feel loved for who they are, they have the courage to explore the world.

Essential Check-ups and Screenings for Optimal Pediatric Health 🩺✨

As parents, we often wait for a cough or a fever before calling the doctor. But some of the most important work we do happens when your child is feeling great!

Preventative care and routine screenings are our "early warning system." They allow us to:

> Track growth and development in real-time.
> Catch potential concerns early, when they are easiest to manage.
> Update essential immunizations to keep our whole community safe.
> Discuss nutrition, sleep, and emotional well-being.

Think of these visits as a dedicated "pit stop" to ensure your little one’s engine is running perfectly for the adventures ahead. 🏃‍♂️💨
