Storing "Liquid Gold": A Parent’s Guide to Breast Milk Safety 🍼✨

Breast milk is one of the most precious gifts you can give your baby, packed with nutrition and immunity. To keep that "liquid gold" safe and high-quality, proper storage is essential.

⏱️ The Storage Cheat Sheet:
> Room Temp (up to 25°C): Use within 4 hours.
> Fridge (at the back): Safe for 3–5 days.
> Freezer (-18°C): Best for 3–6 months. Always label with the date!

❄️ Safe Thawing 101:
> Best Method: Thaw overnight in the fridge.
> Need it faster? Place the container in cold water. Never use hot water, as it destroys vital antibodies!
> Crucial Rule: Once thawed, use within 24 hours. Never refreeze thawed milk.

Dr. Wolmarans’ Top Tips:
✅ Wash hands before handling.
✅ Use food-grade bags or containers (avoid glass to prevent breakage).
✅ Don't mix fresh milk with already chilled/frozen milk.
✅ Trust your nose—if it smells sour or "off," discard it.

It’s Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Day 2026! The theme this year is "A long and healthy life for all South Africans," and it starts with the small decisions you make today.

Did you know that physical inactivity, poor diet, and to***co use are the leading drivers of non-communicable diseases (NCDs)?

Today, let's take on the challenge to make one "Strategic Shift":
✨ Swap a sugary drink for water.
✨ Take the stairs instead of the lift.
✨ Schedule that check-up you’ve been putting off.

Your health is your most valuable asset. Invest in it wisely! 🩺✨

Tummy Time: More Than Just Play!👶✨

As a healthcare provider, I’m often asked about the "why" behind Tummy Time. While it’s great for preventing Plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome), the benefits go much deeper into your baby’s developmental milestones!

Why it matters:
> Muscle Strength: It builds the neck, shoulder, and core muscles needed for rolling, crawling, and eventually walking.
> Motor Skills: Lifting that tiny head improves coordination and body awareness.
> Brain Power: It encourages problem-solving (like reaching for a toy) and sensory exploration.

Dr. Wolmarans’ Quick Tips for Success:
1️⃣ Start Small: Begin with just a few minutes, several times a day.
2️⃣ Safety First: Always supervise and use a clean, firm surface like a playmat.
3️⃣ Make it Fun: Use mirrors, colorful toys, or sing songs to keep them engaged!
4️⃣ Watch the Cues: If they get fussy, it’s okay to stop and try again later. Every baby moves at their own pace.

Important Note: If you have any concerns about your baby's development, always consult with your pediatrician, alternatively let's chat at your next check-up! 🩺

Understanding Epilepsy on International Epilepsy Day
February 9, 2026🧠

On International Epilepsy Day, let’s clear the air.
Misunderstanding leads to fear, but education leads to empathy.

✅ Fact: NEVER put anything in someone’s mouth during a seizure. Instead, protect their head, roll them onto their side once the shaking stops, and stay with them.

✅ Fact: With proper medical management, most people with epilepsy lead full, active, and successful lives.

✅ Fact: Epilepsy is a neurological condition caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It is not contagious and is not a mental illness.

Knowledge is the first step toward inclusion. 🎗️

4 FEBRUARY - WORLD CANCER DAY 2026!
Awareness is our first line of defense.

Today, on World Cancer Day 2026, we reflect on how far we have come in the fight against cancer. As physicians, we see the bravery of patients and the progress of science every day. But the most powerful tool we have is often the simplest: Early Detection.

This year’s theme, "Close the Care Gap," reminds us that everyone deserves access to life-saving screenings and treatment.
> Schedule your screenings.
> Listen to your body.
> Support those currently in the fight.

Together, we can change the narrative. Speak to Dr Wolmarans should you have any queries regarding your child's health👍

Is it Colic?🕊️

Colic is often a "diagnosis of exclusion," meaning we rule out other issues first. Here is a quick breakdown:

> The Look: Red face, furrowed brow, or clenched fists.
> The Sound: More intense and urgent than "hunger" crying.
> The Cause: Immature nervous system or gas/digestion.
> The Cure: Time, patience, and gentle soothing techniques.

The Silver Lining: It is temporary! It doesn’t mean your baby is sick or that you’re doing a bad job.

Parent Tip: The "Colic Carry" (holding baby face-down across your forearm) can sometimes work wonders for a fussy tummy.

Why "Routine" is a Secret Weapon for Your Baby (and Your Sanity) 🕒✨

As a pediatrician, I often get asked: "Does my baby really need a strict schedule?" The short answer? Not necessarily a strict one, but a predictable one.

Babies, especially those navigating teething or colic, find immense comfort in knowing what comes next. When the world feels overstimulating or their gums are aching, a familiar rhythm acts as a "safety net" for their nervous system.

Why it works:

> Lowers Cortisol: Predictable transitions (like bath → book → bed) lower stress hormones, making it easier for them to settle.

> Regulates the Body Clock: It helps set their circadian rhythm, which is vital for long-term sleep health.

> Empowers You: When you have a "flow," it’s easier to spot when something is actually wrong versus just "overtiredness."

Dr. Wolmarans’ Top Tip: Don't aim for "The Clock," aim for "The Sequence." If a nap starts 30 minutes late because of a diaper blowout, don't panic! Just follow your usual steps in the same order.

Is your little one a "go with the flow" baby, or do they thrive on a tight schedule? Let's discuss in the comments! 👇

Is it a cold, or is it teething? 🦷

Most babies begin their teething journey between 6 and 10 months, though it’s perfectly normal to see that first pearly white as early as 3 months or as late as 12 months.

Common early signs to look out for:

> Increased drooling (keep those bibs handy!)
> Gums that look swollen or red
> A sudden desire to chew on everything
> Mild irritability or disrupted sleep

Every child is different, and their "teething timeline" is unique to them. If you’re concerned about your little one’s progress or discomfort, let’s chat at your next visit!

In 2026, health organizations are shifting the narrative from just "prevention" to "Awareness and Support." While things like folic acid and prenatal care are vital, about 50% to 70% of birth defects still have an unknown cause. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), every 4.5 minutes, a baby is born with a birth defect.

This January, we recognize National Birth Defects Awareness Month.

We want to celebrate the strength of families and individuals living with these conditions. No two stories are the same, and . From early intervention to lifelong care, community support makes all the difference.

Let’s spread kindness and awareness. Reach out to a family you know or share this post to help break the stigma.🧡

🚀Want to level up your parenting game?
Try these 4 science-backed "Quick Wins" for a healthier family dynamic:

✅ The Power of Play: Play is a child’s language. Join their world for 15 minutes today—no rules, just fun.
✅ Consistent Boundaries: Kindness + Firmness = Security.

Did you know that cervical cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer? 🎗️

This Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, we’re sharing the three pillars of protection:

✨ Vaccination: The HPV vaccine significantly reduces risk.

✨ Screening: Regular cervical screening (smear tests) can identify cell changes before they turn into cancer.

✨ Symptoms: Being aware of changes in your body and speaking to a GP.

Don’t let a busy schedule get in the way of your health. A 5-minute appointment could save your life. 🧡
