Here are some of the things you need to consider when it comes to planning a cremation for your loved one:

🕊️ Wall of Remembrance
Many churches have a Wall of Remembrance. You may wish to hold the memorial service after the cremation, so that the interment of ashes can take place straight afterwards.

🕊️ Service Before Cremation
You can choose to have your loved one’s casket present at a church, chapel, or another venue before the cremation. This gives family and friends a chance to say goodbye.

🕊️ Final Farewell
After the service, it is common for family and friends to gather outside for a brief committal before the hearse departs. This moment often provides a quiet sense of closure.

🕊️ Private Cremation
Cremations are usually carried out privately and are not attended by family members.

🕊️Medical Devices
Be sure to let your Funeral Planner know if your loved one had any implanted medical devices, such as a pacemaker. These devices may pose a risk to those who handle the cremation.

🕊️ Personal Touches
You may wish to write messages on the casket. This small gesture can bring comfort to those attending and make the service more personal.

Can I use an existing grave for a loved one?

Yes, you can. Using an existing grave is often chosen if a family member has already been buried there or if your loved one wished to be laid to rest alongside someone else.

To do this, we will need the grave’s title deed or grave number, along with the cemetery details. If you don’t have these, we can help locate them. We also check that there is space for another burial, and a family member will need to sign a document at the cemetery office granting permission to reopen the grave.

Using an existing grave can be a meaningful way to keep your loved ones close.

There’s a moment I’ll never forget.

I was phoned to take into our care someone’s loved one who had passed away in an Alzheimer’s unit. As I wheeled my stretcher down the corridor, residents watched quietly from their wheelchairs. In that silence, I felt every pair of eyes following me — eyes that knew, in their own way, that someone was leaving.

Out of respect, I gently asked the staff if the residents could be moved to their rooms, so that I could do what I was there for. A nursing staff member said, “Don’t worry, they don’t know what’s going on anyway. Just walk past them.”

But standing there, I knew that wasn’t true. There was awareness. There was sadness. There was fear.

That moment changed me. It made me realise that while dementia may take memories, it does not take humanity.

It was also the beginning of my deep personal interest in Alzheimer’s and dementia — a journey that led me to visit De Hogeweyk in the Netherlands and ignited my passion to transform dementia care through multisensory experiences and compassionate engagement.

On 15 October 2025, I had the honour of being a guest speaker at the ADASA seminar, where I spoke on the topic: “Sensory Integration Therapy Guidance: Dementia” — sharing insights on Awakening the Senses and the profound impact of sensory stimulation in dementia care.

It was a privilege to connect with others who share this passion and to continue advocating for a kind of care that sees beyond memory — one that honours the person who still is.
