I was prescribed a wrist brace, now what?
A patient may be advised to wear a wrist brace after an injury for several clinical reasons:

1. Immobilisation: Wearing a wrist brace provides support and immobilization to the injured area, preventing excessive movement. This helps to protect the injured ligaments, tendons, or bones and allows them to heal properly.

2. Pain reduction: The compression and support provided by a wrist brace can help alleviate pain by reducing pressure on the injured wrist. It limits excessive movement, which can exacerbate pain or cause discomfort.

3. Stability: Wrist braces enhance joint stability by providing external support, particularly for conditions like sprains, strains, tendonitis, or fractures. This stability allows for faster healing and prevents further damage to the affected area.

4. Inflammation control: Wrist braces often offer compression, which helps to control swelling and reduce inflammation around the injured wrist. Minimizing swelling can promote faster healing and alleviate discomfort.

5. Rehabilitation: A wrist brace can be beneficial during the rehabilitation phase by limiting movement and preventing re-injury while the patient engages in therapeutic exercises or physical therapy.

How long should I wear a wrist brace? The duration of wearing a wrist brace depends on the severity of the injury and the recommendation of a healthcare professional. Some injuries may require a few weeks of continuous wear, while others may only need limited usage during activities that put stress on the wrist.

How do I clean my wrist brace? Clean your brace following the manufacturer's instructions. Generally, it is recommended to gently hand wash the brace with mild soap and water, and then allow it to air dry thoroughly before reuse.

Drop Foot Ankle Foot Orthosis

A patient may need to wear a drop-foot splint after a cerebrovascular accident or neurological incident because these conditions can cause weakness or paralysis in the muscles that lift the foot. This can result in a condition called foot drop, where the foot may drag or slap on the ground when walking, increasing the risk of falls and injuries. A drop-foot splint or AFO helps to support the foot and ankle in a neutral position, preventing the foot from dropping and improving gait and stability.
A drop-foot splint / AFO helps to reduce fatigue and improve walking speed, making it easier for the patient to perform daily activities.

Abbreviation: AFO – Ankle Foot Orthosis

Different AFO types:
Plastic Off The Shelf AFO
Carbon Fibre Drop Foot AFO
Turbomed Xtern AFO
Custom Bracing AFO

The benefits of a drop-foot splint / AFO include:

1. Improved walking ability: The splint helps keep the foot in a neutral position, which can prevent stumbling or tripping while walking.

2. Reduced fatigue: By increasing the efficiency of gait and reducing the need for compensatory movements, the splint can help reduce muscle fatigue and prevent postural fatigue as well.

3. Prevention of knee hyperextension: Use of a drop-foot splint ensures that the knee joint remains extended during walking, avoiding hyperextension and subsequent injury.

4. Improved safety: A drop-foot splint can help reduce the risk of falls and enhance safety while walking.

5. Facilitates healing: The drop-foot splint can help facilitate healing and prevent further injury by immobilizing the affected area and allowing it to rest and heal.

Overall, the use of a drop-foot splint can significantly improve a patient's mobility, reduce their dependence on others, and improve their sense of independence.

ÖSSUR SPEEDBRACE
An Ankle Speedbrace is a type of ankle brace that provides support and stability to the ankle joint. It is often used by patients who have suffered an ankle injury, such as a sprain or strain, or who have a chronic condition that affects the stability of the ankle joint, such as chronic ankle instability.

A patient may need to wear an Ankle Speedbrace for various reasons, including:

1. Ankle injury: Ankle sprains, strains, and fractures are common injuries that can cause pain, swelling, and instability in the ankle joint.

2. Chronic ankle instability: This condition can develop after repeated ankle sprains or other injuries, causing the ankle to feel weak or unstable.

3. Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons that run along the ankle can cause pain and swelling.

4. Arthritis: Arthritis can affect the ankle joint, causing pain, stiffness, and limited mobility.

5. Post-surgical support: After ankle surgery, a Speedbrace may be used to provide support and promote healing.

The benefits of wearing an Ankle Speedbrace depend on the specific condition being treated, but can include:

1. Support: The brace helps to stabilize the ankle joint, reducing the risk of further injury and promoting healing.

2. Pain relief: The compression provided by the brace can help to reduce pain and swelling in the ankle.

3. Improved mobility: By providing support to the ankle joint, the brace can help to improve mobility and range of motion.

4. Quicker recovery: Wearing an Ankle Speedbrace can help to speed up the recovery process by reducing the risk of further injury and providing support to the ankle as it heals.

Overall, the benefits of wearing an Ankle Speedbrace can include reduced pain, improved stability and mobility, and faster recovery times. However, it is important to consult with your Doctor, Physiotherapist and Orthotist to determine if a Speedbrace is appropriate for your specific condition and to ensure that it is fitted and used correctly.

08/06/2023

A knee ROM (range of motion) brace is typically used after a knee injury or surgery to help protect and support the knee while also allowing for controlled movement and rehabilitation. The brace can limit the range of motion of the knee joint, which can be beneficial during the initial stages of recovery when excessive movement could cause further damage.

Here are some of the reasons why a knee ROM brace may be recommended:

1. After surgery: A knee ROM brace may be used after surgery to help protect the knee joint as it heals.

2. To prevent further injury: A knee ROM brace can help prevent further injury to the knee joint by limiting the range of motion and providing support.

3. To promote healing: By limiting the range of motion and providing support, a knee ROM brace can help promote healing of the knee joint.

4. To aid in rehabilitation: A knee ROM brace can be used as part of a rehabilitation program to help improve knee function and range of motion.

The benefits of wearing a knee ROM brace may include:

1. Protection: The brace can help protect the knee joint from further injury or damage.

2. Support: The brace can provide support to the knee, which can help improve stability and reduce pain.

3. Controlled movement: The brace can help control the amount of movement in the knee joint, which can aid in rehabilitation and prevent further injury.

4. Improved healing: By limiting the range of motion and providing support, a knee ROM brace can help promote healing of the knee joint.

It is important to note that a knee ROM brace should be used under the guidance of a Doctor, Physiotherapist and Orthotist as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
