The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign (16 Days Campaign) is a United Nations campaign which takes place annually from 25 November (International Day of No Violence against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day). Other key commemorative days during this period include World Aids Day on the 1st December and the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, on 3 December of every year.

2020 where we have seen our lives and world change and attempt to adapt to the changes that have come with the Covid-19 pandemic. We have also an alarmingly high increase in the many cases of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide in our country. The pandemic has brought to light a host of social ills that jave been dubbed as normal and become normalized. Gender-Based Violence, Gender-Based Silence and Femicide should never be topics that are swept under the rug.

Lest we forget, as we advocate for women and girl children let's not forget about the boy child. The important role that a boy child will play in the irradiation and fight against Gender-Based Violence. Let's raise them well so they too become men who know and understand that violence is not the way to settle disputes. Let's raise them to become strong powerful men with character and integrity, men who understand that a woman is a partner and not a prized possession.

Let's try and unlearn the old ways that have dictated and damaged our societies. It's time to carve a new path, one that asserts basic human rights and equality for all.

Don't keep quiet speak up so that never again willl the future generations of young people will have to ask themselves, where in history they lost their power.

The National Nutrition and Obesity Week is observed from 9 to 19 October to create awareness among consumers about obesity and the importance of eating healthy.

If there is anything that the covid19 pandemic has taught us. It's that good nutrition is important for our immunity. Being mindful about what we consume and put in our bodies is important.

Let's not only eat well for our immunity only, let's also do it for our overall health and well-being. To prevent lifestyle related illnesses which are harder to treat with obesity in the mix such as Hypertension, diabetes, strokes, gout, vericose veins, etc.

Our bodies are like temples and we should respect them like we would an actual place of worship. You only get one body in this life, love it, nourish it and live well. It all starts with making conscious decisions, for yourself and loved ones.

World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.

1 in 6 people suffer or have suffered from a mental health related illness. Be it depression, anxiety, ptsd, post-partum depression /psychosis. Or we know of someone with bipolar mood disorder, schizophrenia, and multiple personality disorders that have gone untreated. Which have affected their lives as well as those of their loved ones.

Some parents have children who fall under the autism spectrum and adhd just to name a few but rarely talk about, advocate for it or even engage on it.

More now than ever with the Covid-19 pandemic. A lot of people who thought themselves to be mentally strong, have found themselves struggling with the effects of the pandemic on tgeir mental health. With people having lost their jobs and families struggling to make ends meat, the breadwinners have taken strain.

The ones who suffer the most are those people who are seemingly happy and cheerful all the time. Please check on your loved ones even the comedians in the family. They too also need it,if not more than the rest of us.

Should you find yourself struggling with your mental health please do reach out. There is help out there. We should normalize going to the psychologist and/or counselors for our mental health, like we do for our physical ailments to the general practitioner. There is no shame in looking after yourself, your health and that of your family as a whole.A little love and compassion really goes a long way.

World Su***de Prevention Day is commemorated on 10 September to promote worldwide commitment and action to prevent su***des. On average, almost 3 000 people commit su***de daily. For every person who completes a su***de, 20 or more may attempt to end their lives.

About one million people commit su***de each year. Every 40 seconds, the loss of a person who killed themselves shatters the lives of family and friends.

For family and friends affected by su***de or attempted su***de, the emotional impact can last for many years.

World Su***de Prevention Day is an awareness day observed on 10 September every year, in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent su***des, with various activities around the world since 2003.

With the Covid-19 pandemic came a lot of challenges and it has brought to light those that have long been existence. More soo for people with anxiety and depression to name but a few. People have had to experience paycuts, retrenchments and lay offs. For those in the frontlines burnout and exhaustion. With our economy not doing great at the moment the unemployment, poverty and hunger problems have come to the fore.

Not everyone has or had savings for a rainy day. Not everyone has coping mechanisms that have equipped them for the amount of stress and strain that we're currently faced with. As it is a global problem that we are faced with, there is no one to blame for it. A little love and compassion goes a long way. Please check on your friends, colleagues, family and loved ones your call could be the one to save a life.

September marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Around 80% of all child cancer cases globally occur in low and middle income countries yet fewer than a third of children are diagnosed in these countries and of those that are treated less than 20% survive.

Child cancer is highly curable with survival rates of around 80% in developed countries yet in low and middle income countries tens of thousands of children die needlessly every year from the disease - most dying without any effective pain relief. Poor diagnosis coupled with too few specially trained doctors and nurses and the mistaken belief that child cancer is too difficult to cure combine to create very low survival rates.

In fact, at least 50% of child cancers can be cured even in resource-poor environments with relatively simple and inexpensive drugs and procedures which have been known to doctors for decades.

National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is an annual national health campaign organized by major childhood cancer organizations to increase awareness of pediatric cancer and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.

National Kidney Awareness Week, celebrated from September 7 to 11, provides the ideal opportunity to educate and address issues concerning kidney health, kidney donation and transplants.

Unfortunately, the lack of education in transplant matter is only making things more difficult which is why taking a hands-on approach and educating the medical fraternity and public. In order to have families, friends and colleagues start the conversation and that everyone accepts that organ and tissue donation is a benefit to society.

It has been estimated that 10% of the world's population has some degree of CKD. From this statistic, it can be estimated that 5 million South Africans >20 years of age have CKD, and in black South Africans the figure is almost certainly higher.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of end-stage kidney failure in the world and a very low rate of organ and tissue donation and transplants.

Conversations around oragan and tissue transplantation are not ones usually had by African families due to different beliefs. Trying to change the mindset and educating the community regarding the importance of organ transplants is a must as chronic kidney disease affects everyone across all racial and social classes. It does not discriminate.

Therefore the advocacy for kidney health and education on the means of preventing the prevelance of Kidney disease is important. Keeping your kidneys and overall health in check can actually help you to have a better quality of life as far as your health is concerned. Follow the 8 golden rules in maintaining good kidney health. Your body will thank you for it.

The 26th - 31st August is known as African Traditional Medicine Week. Traditional African medicine is a holistic discipline involving the use of indigenous herbalism combined with aspects of African spirituality.

About 80% of Africa's population relies on traditional medicine for their basic health needs. In some cases traditional medicine is the only healthcare service available, accessible and affordable to many people on the continent. In this case the significant contribution of traditional medicine as a major provider of healthcare services in Africa cannot be underestimated.

African Traditional Medicine plays an integral part in the lives, health and wellness of African People. It's role and importance should not be underestimated.

The 1st - 7th August is known as World Breastfeeding Week. The theme of World Breastfeeding Week 2020 is โ€œSupport breastfeeding for a healthier planetโ€. In line with this theme, WHO and UNICEF are calling on governments to protect and promote womenโ€™s access to skilled breastfeeding counselling, a critical component of breastfeeding support.

Breastfeeding provides every child with the best possible start in life. It delivers health, nutritional and emotional benefits to both children and mothers. And it forms part of a sustainable food system. But while breastfeeding is a natural process, it is not always easy. Mothers need support โ€“ both to get started and to sustain breastfeeding.

Skilled counselling services can ensure that mothers and families receive this support, along with the information, the advice, and the reassurance they need to nourish their babies optimally. Breastfeeding counselling can help mothers to build confidence while respecting their individual circumstances and choices. Counselling can empower women to overcome challenges and prevent feeding and care practices that may interfere with optimal breastfeeding, such as the provision of unnecessary liquids, foods, and breastmilk substitutes to infants and young children.

Let's support breastfeeding mothers and their babies. Especially new moms who lack the skill and are anxious about the whole breastfeeding experience or apprehensive about starting and continuing breastfeeding. Soo many women stop breastfeeding prematurely due to lack of support, knowledge, confidence and encouragement to do so. By encouraging and giving breastfeeding women information and support they need. As always a little love and support goes a long way.
