Understanding Your Calf Complex 👣

The calf is made up of two primary muscles — the gastrocnemius (upper calf) and the soleus — working together to support walking, running, jumping, and balance.

These muscles merge into the Achilles tendon, attaching to the heel bone (calcaneus). This structure plays an essential role in force transfer and efficient movement.

Tightness in the calf muscles may:

⚪ Limit ankle mobility
⚪ Increase strain on the Achilles tendon
⚪ Contribute to heel discomfort
⚪ Influence lower limb biomechanics

Maintaining flexibility and proper joint function supports healthy movement patterns and overall musculoskeletal balance.

STRETCH OF THE WEEK 👣

Dr. Ahlisna Ellis demonstrates the Standing Wall Calf Stretch — a simple yet powerful stretch targeting the gastrocnemius muscle (upper calf) and the Achilles tendon.

Why this stretch matters:

✔️ Improves ankle mobility
✔️ Reduces calf tightness
✔️ Supports Achilles tendon health
✔️ Helps prevent strain and injury
✔️ Great for runners, gym-goers, and anyone on their feet all day

Tight calves can contribute to foot pain, heel pain, and even knee or lower back discomfort. Regular stretching keeps your lower limbs balanced and functioning optimally.

Consistent, controlled stretching can play a supportive role in maintaining lower limb flexibility and overall musculoskeletal health.

Stretching relieves muscle tension ✨

But if your lower back tightness keeps returning, the cause may not be the muscle alone.

The Quadratus Lumborum (QL) attaches to:
• The lumbar spine
• The pelvis
• The 12th rib

When there is reduced movement in these joints, the muscle often compensates — leading to recurring tightness and discomfort.

This is why addressing muscle tension alone isn’t always enough.

Chiropractic care focuses on restoring proper joint mobility, improving biomechanics, and reducing muscular overcompensation — helping you move more freely and comfortably.

Address the cause, not just the symptom.

Move Well to Live Well.

Your Quadratus Lumborum (QL) — a deep lower back stabilising muscle — may be contributing to that tension.

✨ Check out our latest reel where Dr. Ahlisna Ellis demonstrates how to properly stretch this area safely and effectively.

Small adjustments in how you stretch can make a big difference in how your lower back feels.

Save the reel and give it a try tonight 🩷

One-sided lower back tightness? 👇🏼 It may involve more than one muscle.

Two key muscles often responsible are:

🟠 Latissimus Dorsi
A large back muscle that:
• Assists with overhead movement
• Supports posture
• Connects the upper body to the pelvis
• Influences lower back tension

🔵 Quadratus Lumborum (QL)
A deep stabilising muscle that:
• Supports the lumbar spine
• Controls side bending
• Stabilises the pelvis when walking
• Often becomes tight with prolonged sitting or imbalance

When these muscles are overworked or compensating, they can cause:
• One-sided lower back pain
• Tightness when reaching overhead
• Stiffness when standing up
• A pulling sensation along the side of the torso

Stretching can help relieve tension ✨
But if the tightness keeps returning, there may be underlying joint restriction contributing to the problem.

Proper assessment helps identify the root cause — not just the symptom.

Move Well. Live Well.

Think chiropractic care is just for back pain? Think again!

Here are some key reasons to see a registered chiropractor:
1️⃣ Back & neck pain relief – classic, but still the most common
2️⃣ Headaches & migraines – tension in your spine can trigger pain
3️⃣ Muscle tightness & hamstring issues – improve flexibility & movement
4️⃣ Posture correction – feel taller, stronger, and more aligned
5️⃣ Prevent injuries & improve performance – for runners, athletes, and active lifestyles
6️⃣ Overall wellness & mobility – help your body function at its best

💡 Even if you’re not in pain, an assessment can catch imbalances before they become problems.
