📢PIMART
The Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa (PSSA) notes with great satisfaction the long-awaited judgment delivered by the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) in the matter concerning the Pharmacist-Initiated Management of Antiretroviral Therapy (PIMART).

In its ruling, the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) upheld the authority of the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) to approve and implement the PIMART programme. This judgment upholds the 2023 ruling of the North Gauteng High Court, which recognised the PIMART initiative as a legitimate and necessary expansion of the pharmacist’s scope of practice.

The outcome marks a significant milestone for both the pharmacy profession and public health in South Africa. Under PIMART, pharmacists who complete the approved training and obtain the Section 22A(15) permit related to PIMART will be authorised to initiate and manage specific aspects of HIV prevention and care, thereby increasing access to these services, especially for people unable to access conventional healthcare facilities or those in underserved areas.
