Are jokes about people who have lost parts of their bodies or the use of parts of their bodies humorous? Are they really funny?

The following are quotes of body part jokes that I googled:

1. Leg: “What did Jenny get for her birthday after a car accident? An amputation.”
2. Arm: “After surgery, a man claimed that he couldn’t feel his legs. The doctor replied: Of course, I
amputated your arms.”
3. Eyes: “Why can’t blind people eat fish? Because it’s seafood.”
4. Ears: “I hear pumpkins have no ears. Are they deaf too?
5. Tongue: “You shouldn’t joke about people without tongues. They are pretty tasteless.”

These might be funny to someone, but not to me. Loss of part of the body or loss of the use of part of the body is no joy. Likewise, the loss of parts of the brain due to brain cell death is no joke.

Recently I was thinking about which dementia joke I could post when it dawned on me that dementia jokes do not deserve anybody’s laughter, giggle, or smile. Dementia jokes are actually a mockery of the behaviour and personalities of people living with dementia.

Yes, I Thakane also found dementia jokes to be humorous. But now, after a long period of working with families of and with persons living with dementia, my eyes have suddenly opened. I deem those jokes a mockery of people living with dementia and a cruelty to their families.

Some may agree with me while others may not. But please ponder this ‘Food for Thought’. , , .
