Tuesday Truths 🤓
How amazing is this?
Genetics, engineering, food science, biotechnology and human nutrition & health - All encompassed in this Sicilian Rouge Tomato!🍅
CRISPR-Cas9 is a fast, more affordable method used to edit sequences of DNA. CRISPR refers to a short DNA sequence, and in nature is used by bacteria to defend themselves against viruses.
Cas9 is an enzyme used which "cuts" the strands of DNA at a specific location.
CRISPR is used to not only transfer genes but also edit the genome directly.
Using this technology, Sanatech Seed has been able to engineer a tomato high in GABA, which is already naturally found in tomatoes. Amplifying the content of GABA in the tomato allows for a more functional food, in order to reduce the risk of high blood pressure.
These tomatoes became available to the public in Japan on 15 September this year.
This is definitely the future of food, what an exciting time to be a Food Scientist! 🤓🍅
