Tuesday Truths 🤓

How amazing is this?
Genetics, engineering, food science, biotechnology and human nutrition & health - All encompassed in this Sicilian Rouge Tomato!🍅

CRISPR-Cas9 is a fast, more affordable method used to edit sequences of DNA. CRISPR refers to a short DNA sequence, and in nature is used by bacteria to defend themselves against viruses.
Cas9 is an enzyme used which "cuts" the strands of DNA at a specific location.
CRISPR is used to not only transfer genes but also edit the genome directly.
Using this technology, Sanatech Seed has been able to engineer a tomato high in GABA, which is already naturally found in tomatoes. Amplifying the content of GABA in the tomato allows for a more functional food, in order to reduce the risk of high blood pressure.

These tomatoes became available to the public in Japan on 15 September this year.

This is definitely the future of food, what an exciting time to be a Food Scientist! 🤓🍅

Happy Heritage Day, South Africa!

Let's take today to appreciate and celebrate where we came from - our history, heritage, roots.

Our unity lies in our diversity - and our ability to accept each other for our beliefs and differences 🌟

We are so lucky to be able to be part of such a diverse country - we have so much to learn from each other, lets not take that for granted 🇿🇦🤍

Here's a Tuesday Truth for you 🤓🍄

A little snippet into the flavour and taste of mushrooms.

MSG is not the bad guy everyone makes it out to be, and can be found naturally present in many other foods as well - including tomatoes!

This 👏🏼

This 👏🏼

The marketing for this product is ridiculous. “Clean” and “without chemicals” on this ad. Other ads I’ve seen they state things like “no nasty chemicals.”

A “nationally renowned pediatrician” has been promoting this product and in her videos makes sure to always mention pesticides and heavy metals and to feed your toddler “whole foods rather than processed foods.” It’s so bizarre.

She mentions heavy metals and pesticides with no context other than to seemingly make parents believe this product is better than others in that regard, but obviously no data to back it. This is obviously a processed product as well, which isn’t a bad thing, but how can you be demonizing processed foods in the same video where you promote a processed product?

Make it make sense.

"World Food Day is calling for global solidarity to help all populations, and especially the most vulnerable, to recover from the crisis, and to make food systems more resilient and robust so they can withstand increasing volatility and climate shocks, deliver affordable and sustainable healthy diets for all, and decent livelihoods for food system workers” 🌍🙏

Interesting read!

Researchers are redesigning forms of real sugar to deliver sweetness with fewer calories. But tricking our biology is not easy.
