Dhanteras: Celebrating the Birth of Lord Dhanvantari, the God of Ayurveda🪷🌿

Dhanteras, a significant festival in Hinduism, marks the birth of Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician and father of Ayurveda. Today, we honor the founder of India's ancient healing science, who gifted humanity the wisdom of natural health and wellness🩺🌿.

The Legend of Lord Dhanvantari

According to mythology, Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the ocean during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) with a pot of Amrit (nectar) and Ayurvedic texts. He is revered as a symbol of healing, compassion, and wellness.

Significance of Dhanteras🪔

Dhanteras celebrates the triumph of good over evil and the gift of health and wellness to humanity. It's an occasion to:

1. Honor Ayurveda: Recognize the importance of natural healing and preventive medicine.
2. Promote wellness: Embrace healthy habits and self-care.
3. Seek blessings: For good health, prosperity, and longevity.

Importance of Ayurveda

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, emphasizes:

1. Holistic health: Integrating physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
2. Natural remedies: Using herbs, diet, and lifestyle to prevent and treat diseases.
3. Preventive care: Focusing on health promotion and disease prevention.

Celebrating Dhanteras

1. Clean and declutter: Purify your home and mind.
2. Worship Lord Dhanvantari: Seek blessings for health and wellness.
3. Embrace Ayurveda: Incorporate natural practices into your daily life.

Let's honor the wisdom of Lord Dhanvantari and the ancient science of Ayurveda. May this Dhanteras bring you and your family health, prosperity, and happiness!

Om Shri Dhanvantri Namaha

Ayurveda says: “Eat what nature grows in your season, in your region.” Seasonal foods are easier to digest, give you the nutrients you need right now, and reduce the carbon footprint of shipping food across the world.

Ayurveda Day, initiated in 2016 by the Ministry of Ayush under the visionary guidance of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, was first observed on 28th October 2016 (Dhanteras), marking the birth anniversary of Lord Dhanvantari.

From 2025 onwards, Ayurveda Day will be celebrated annually on September 23rd, coinciding with the Autumnal Equinox — symbolizing balance in nature and harmony in life.

In Ayurveda, Raktaprasadaka refers to the purification and nourishment of the blood (rakta dhatu). It is a therapeutic and preventive concept that ensures blood remains healthy, pure, and capable of supporting all tissues, especially the skin and reproductive health.

The following 4 Ayurvedic herbs do just that:
1. Ashoka, this is one such herb that forms a part of the classic ayurvedic uterine tonic for raktapradara (menorrhagia/DUB), dysmenorrhea; namely Ashokarista. Clinical studies support its traditional uses.

2. Lodhra is an astringent, styptic, kapha-pitta-pacifying herb; it is often indicated for menorrhagia, leucorrhoea, and as part of PCOS protocols. Clinical studies have demonstrated its benefits on insulin resistance and hyperandrogenism.

3. Shatavari is a cooling, rejuvenative herb that supports the formation of rasa (plasma)/rakta dhātu(blood). It is recommended in cases of menstrual regularity, peri-menopausal balance, lactation, and post-partum replenishment. A clinical trial found that this herb significantly increases serum prolactin and enhances galactagogue outcomes when compared to a placebo. It is one of the most well-researched Ayurvedic herbs.

4. Manjistha is the primary rakta-śodhaka (blood purifying herb) with anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic, and antioxidant actions. It is especially recommended for pelvic congestion, dysmenorrhea, and skin-reproductive conditions.

Try this yummy healthy snack...Did You Know This Recipe Balances Pitta?

Here's why...

Dates are sweet and heavy, they calm Pitta’s heat and provide grounding energy.
Almonds and Cashews when soaked, are cooling and easier to digest, while cashews add creaminess. Both nourish without overheating.
Ghee is cooling, lubricates the body, and supports digestion, which is key for a Pitta imbalance.
Cardamom acts as a cooling spice that aids digestion and reduces Pitta’s intensity.
Coconut and Rose Water are both cooling and soothing.

Serving Suggestions:

Enjoy 1-2 ladoos as a mid-morning or afternoon snack to curb Pitta-related irritability or hunger.
Pair with a glass of cool (not ice-cold) milk or almond milk for extra nourishment.
Avoid overconsumption (stick to 1-2 per serving),

Always consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized advice, especially if you have specific health conditions or severe Pitta imbalances. If you have nut allergies, you can substitute with sunflower or pumpkin seeds (soaked and lightly roasted) for a similar effect.
