Spring calving and lambing season is happening now in most summer rainfall areas especially where there is a natural breeding season. Proper calf and lamb rearing is essential to protect the newly born calves and lambs as those are your sources of income. Success is based on keeping calves/lambs in a comfortable environment and ensuring they receive colostrum. Colostrum is the first milk that the mother produces. Ensure calves/lambs receive colostrum at least within the first 24 hours after birth (ideally within 3 - 6hrs of life) Colostrum contains antibodies and other nutrients necessary for survival of the newborn calf/lamb.

Be aware of the Rift Valley Fever outbreak in the Free State province. This viral disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and affects cattle, sheep & goats leading to deaths and abortions. Can affect humans as well if they come into contact with infected blood or aborted material of infected animals. Protect your animals through vaccination. Only vaccinate healthy animals. Be aware that vaccination protects against future infections but does not cure the disease. Although the outbreak is currently restricted to a pocket in the Free State, concern is more about the coming Spring/Summer months when the vectors (mosquitoes) of the disease will be on the increase.
