Part 37 – Only love can …
The doctor discharged me the following day, I went to see Itu before I went home. Neo came to fetched me then went home. Pat and Shanella weren’t back yet. Days passed my little Itu was getting stronger and stronger, he was breathing on his own. I asked if we can take him home, the doctor said his just gonna keep him for a week just to make sure his okay. I was soo happy, seeing him there breathing on his own and getting better was a blessing. Neo decided that we should go and see Don at the hospital to tell him that he has a grandson. We drove there.
Me: Do you know which hospital?
Him: Ya Don only goes to one hospital…
We got there, there wasn’t anyone at the reception area so we went through… we got to the ICU wards, all wards were written the patients name at the door. We searched for Don until we found it. Go inside and found the nurse changing sheets.
Neo: Hello… I’m looking for Don Mare, his my father, is this the right ward?
Nurse: Yes, it is…
Me: So where is Don?
Nurse: You haven’t heard?
Me: Heard what?
Nurse: Mrs Mare asked us to switch off the life support machine yesterday. She said there was no way that Mr Mare was gonna make it…
Neo: Wait… I don’t understand… What happened?
Nurse: I’m sorry Mr Mare, your father died yesterday after his wife switched off the life support.
Neo left the ward all mad straight to the car…
Me: You not in the right state to drive…
He ignores me. He was driving recklessly, I prayed that we make it home safe… we got in Neo went straight to the bedroom and got in the shower, at that moment I didn’t know what to say. I stood there, he came out and got dressed.
Me: Neo talk to me…
Him: Don’t know what you wanna talk about…
Me: I can see you trying to hide your pain with your anger. I can see in your eyes that you hurt…
Him: I don’t get hurt Siba…
After dressing he kissed me on my forehead
Him: I’ll see you later… I love you…
Me: Where you going?
He walked out…
I started praying… Went to the kitchen, Pat and Shanella came in.
Pat: Hey Siba
Me: Hey girl…
She looked at me all shocked..
Pat: Ain’t you supposed to be pregnant?
Me: I gave birth few weeks ago…
Her: What! Is the baby okay?
Me: His fine, his a strong premature. The doctor said by next week he’ll be discharged…
Pat: Wow you heard that Shanella? Your cuzin is coming home I can’t wait to meet him.
Pat: What’s his name?
Me: Itumeleng
Her: I’m sure Neo is happy…
Me: Kinda
Her: Hau, what’s wrong?
Me: Don… Lorraine switched off Don’s life support machines, Don died yesterday…
Pat couldn’t believe it, she looked beyond shocked.
Me: Are you okay? Do you wanna sit down?
Her: I don’t believe this… Don cannot die, not like this…
Me: I’m sorry…
Her: you know what let’s go to Lorraine I want her to look me in the eye and tell me that she killed Don, face to face…
Me: Nooo… You don’t wanna go to Lorraine right now…
Pat walked out to her ca. I followed her with Shanella, she drove to Don’s house, the security hesitated letting us in but eventually we did. Lorraine was on her tablet sitting on the couch laughing with some women, drinking wine like nothing happened. Pat went straight to her.
Pat: How could you?
Lorraine: How could I what?
Pat: Kill Don!
Lorraine: I didn’t kill him, he was brain dead! Doctors said there’s no way that he was gonna survive!
Pat: So now you celebrating his death? You supposed to be mourning.
Lorraine: I am mourning, the best way I know how…
Pat: You are evil you gonna burn in hell!
Lorraine: Get out my house!
Pat: This is not your house, its Don’s house.
Lorraine: Do you see Don anywhere?
I went to Pat…
Me: Let’s go Pat, she’s not worth it!
Lorraine: Listen to your friend and go! I have visitors from overseas coming later! We went out, couldn’t believe Lorraine. Her husband just died, I expect her to be crying and heartbroken. We got in the car, Pat started crying I wrapped my arms around her
Me: I’m sorry, I know how close you were to him…
Shanella was sleeping at the backseat, we didn’t go inside the house with her. We drove back to the house, Jomar and Neo were on the kitchen and some 4guys, I didn’t know. Pat was very heartbroken, she went straight to her room with Shanella. Jomar greeted me.
Neo: Where were you?
Me: Lorraine’s house
Neo’s mood changed… he held on the kitchen table tight.
Him: Can you give us some space… You can go to the bedroom…
I knew they were up to no good.
Me: What’s going on?
Neo: Nana please…
I walked to the bedroom, but I stood by the passage to hear what they talking about.
Neo: I need you guys to take care of the security guards at the gate, the rest I will handle on my own
Jomar: You gonna pop a cap on her?
Neo: Yes! I want my face to be the last thing she sees alive. I’m doing this for my brother and my father.
I put my hand around my mouth, I couldn’t believe Neo was gonna kill Lorraine. I suddenly felt sick, ran upstairs to the bathroom and vomited. I went to Pat’s room but I could hear her crying, pointless talking to her. I went downstairs Neo and his squad were gone. I walked around pacing, didn’t know what to do or who to call. I drank water and continued pacing and praying for the car to breakdown to something. Can Go lower his hands and just destruct them. The doorbell rang, I went to open it was Thato.
Him: Wola Skeem
Me: Skeem, what are you doing here?
Him: Hau vele you not gonna invite me in?
Me: Sorry, please come in…
He got inside and looked around.
Him: Your house is beautiful skeem.
Me: How do you know where I live?
Him: Your cuzin told me. My mom wanted to come mara she had to attend some church meeting.
Me: How’s Ses’Phindi vele?
Him: she’s doing fine, just keeps asking about you…
Me: I’ll come visit, plus I have a lot to tell her…
I poured juice, we sat around the coffee table playing monopoly atleast it kept my mind busy… after some time the door flung open. It was Neo and Jomar, Neo looked angry…
Jomar: Calm down…
Neo: Don’t f**ken tell me to calm down!!!... We had a good plan and….
Jomar: Siba is here
Neo turned and looked at me, then Thato.
Me: Neo this is Ses’Phindi’s son Thato, remember I told you about him once?
Neo just looked at him then at me.
Neo: So what is he doing in my house alone with you?
Me: He came to visit me… Actually he came to pass me a message…
Neo: And yall decided to play monopoly and have drinks like a madly inlove couple
Thato stood up.
Him: I think its best I leave, I’ll see you around Skeem…
Me: Okay say hi to your mother…
Him: I will…
He walked out…
I looked at Neo then went upstairs with him following me… I took my bag…
Him: Not this again!
Me: I can’t be around you when you like this…
Him: I come back home and you having drinks with another guy in my house Siba and you expect me not to react to that…
I packed my toiletries and few clothes. Didn’t have much clothes because most of it were at my brother’s house.
Me: I’ll be staying with Ses’Phindi for a while until you sort yourself out.
Him: Ohhh so you going to your boyfriend?
I walked out the room went to the kitchen.
Him: you f**ken leaving me Siba, when I need you most!
I took my ring off, put it on the kitchen counter…
Me: There’s someone else I need to consider now, I don’t wanna raise my child in this unhealthy environment.
Neo: You breaking up with me?
Me: No giving you time to think about what’s important to you…
I walked out…
Him: Siba I lost my brother 5years ago, I just lost my father, and I’m not ready to lose you too.
Me: I’m sorry Neo but I can’t do this anymore.
Neo: I can’t let you leave me Siba… I love you too much to just let you walk out on me…
Me: I’ve made up my mind Neo, I’m leaving…
Him: Fine, there’s only one way you gonna leave me…
Me: How do you mean?
Him: You’re my ride or die Siba, if I can’t have you no other guy will…
Me: Are you threatening me?
Him: I don’t do threats…
I walked out
Him: If you walk out that door I’m gonna kill you… is that what you want for Itu, to grow up without his mother?
I knew Neo was bluffing, he can’t possible kill me
Me: You bluffing…
I walked backwards looking at him until I bumped the door, he took out the gun and pointed at me, this is my first time seeing Neo with a gun.
I know that there’s no way Neo would shoot me, his probably just scaring me. I opened the door, he shoot me. The bullet went straight to my hip bone, I went down. I couldn’t believe what just happened. Neo shoot me, he came close and pointed the gun at me… I was soo scared…
Me: Neo please don’t kill me, my baby still needs me…
He pulled the trigger again. I felt the bullet piercing through my abdomen area. I put my hands there, I was bleeding… started bleeding through my mouth. I came face to face with death. All I could think about was, does my baby know how much I love him. Will he grow up and forgive me for leaving him like this.
Neo put the gun away, quickly grabbed a dish cloth and pressed it against my abdomen area, where he shoot me. Pat came downstairs running…
Pat: I heard gun shots and …
When she saw me laying on the floor, she screamed
Neo: Don’t just stand there screaming, grab my keys we taking her to the hospital.
We got in the car, Neo sat at the back with me, and he was pressing the cloth too hard that I felt more pain… Pat was driving all scared…
Neo: You not gonna die, just hold on abit longer we almost there.
We got to the hospital, I closed my eyes, I don’t know what happened from the door all the way to the ward. I slowly opened my eyes saw a bright light, I wondered if I was dead and if I was in heaven. The room was white I opened my eyes clearly I realize I was in hospital. There was a nurse next to me. I tried to talk but she rushed me out and came back with the doctor. He was carrying a file, paging through it.
Doctor: Welcome back Ms Siba Langa, do you know where you are?
He removed my oxygen from my mouth, so I can speak.
Me: Hospital I think.
Him: You know what happened?
I shook my head no…
Him: You were shot on my hip bone and abdominal area.
Did he say shot? I started thinking hard, then I remembered Neo shot me.
Me: I remember being shot…
Him: Do you know who shot you? Why you got shot?
Me: No…
I was lying I remember very well.
Him: Could be shock, that’s why you don’t remember.
He shine a light in my eyes
Me: I thought I was dead…
Doctor: I don’t think the shooter wanted to kill you…
Me: I think he did doc, I’m in hospital.
Doctor: No mam, the shooter was very vigilant. I don’t think you were shoot by an amateur.
Me: I’m not following.
Doctor: I am a surgeon and in this case I only see from the criminals that you were shop by cops. Your shooter first shot you on you hip bone, then went down and shot you in your abdominal area from a close range, am I right?
Me: I think that’s what happened.
Doctor: He was very precise about the bullet he put on your abdominal area, it missed your vital organs such as your liver, kidney it missed your spine too because it was supposed to come out at the back but the bullet just hit and cracked your Pelvic bone.
Me: What does that mean?
Him: it means you going to be just fine, you might not walk for a while but that’s until your Pelvic bone heals then you’ll be fine.
He left the ward, I couldn’t believe Neo, all along I thought he wanted to kill me, but even though he didn’t shoot to kill me why did he shoot me in the first place? Walking was out of the question. I couldn’t walk at all the nurses helped me with everything it was just 3days me being in hospital, when Neo got in with Itumeleng.
Neo: Say hi to mommy…
My heart just melted, he handed him to me, started kissing him until he cried…
Me: Mummy missed you soo much…
Katlego got in after 5mins.
Her: Hello cuzzy
Me: Hi girl…
Her: How you feeling?
Me: I’ll be fine… Can you take Itu out? Wanna talk to Neo…
Katlego took Itumeleng and went. I looked at Neo.
Me: Why Neo?
Him: I’m sorry Siba… It was too much…
He was standing close to me, I slapped him, I caused myself pain from the sudden movement.
Him: You gonna hurt yourself…
I started tearing up…
Me: Why did you shoot me?
Him: You wanted to leave me, I didn’t know what to do I just reacted to anger and hurt…
Me: Did you wanna kill me?
Him: No… I love you Siba and I would never leave Itumeleng without a mother…
Me: So I guess hanging with Jomar taught you how to use a gun…
Him: No. I’ve long known how to use a gun since I was 13, my father used to train me and we would go hunting
Me: I know that probably shouldn’t have threaten to leave you especially when you needed me the most, but that doesn’t give you the right to do what you did.
Him: I know and I’m sure saying sorry will not erase the nightmare or trauma that I put you through, but Siba please give me one more chance, you and Itumeleng mean the world to me. Spending so much time with him made me realize what’s more important to me, tears started falling.
Me: One last chance Neo and I want you to stop this gangster life you having going on with Jomar.
Him: I long quit it. The day Itu came home.
I smiled at him, he hot up and kissed me also attempting to hug me but I was still in pain…
Me: take it east, I’m still in pain…
Him: Sorry…
Me: Can you get Itu one last time I wanna see him.
He went and got him. His soo adorable and very chubby for a premature baby… Neo and Itu came to visit everyday at the hospital until my day of being discharged came. Was soo happy, Neo came to fetched me.
Me: Where is Itu?
Him: At home with Pat, Shanella and Katlego… Ready to go???
Me: Yessss…
I’m in a wheelchair, just until my pelvis bone heals. We drove home went in, they threw me a small welcome home party. Balloons were in the lounge with a big sign, welcome home almost everyone I know was there Pat, Shanella, Katlego, Portia and my brother was there too. Hugged everyone, opened my presents we talked laughed ate until I got tired. Neo took me upstairs put me to bed and made me take my antidepressants.
Him: I got you a physiotherapist she will come tomorrow.
Me: Where did you get the money?
Him: She’s my aunt, I don’t have to pay her.
We laid there on the bed me, Neo and Itumeleng. My happiest moment, my blessing were just right there in front of me, nothing beats that.
Neo’s aunt came 4times a week for my session. Was getting there, my pelvis was healing was using crushes. Itu was growing and he looked more and more like Neo and his taken after his father’s stubbornness, Neo was not about the gangster life anymore. We were all sitting in the lounge having lunch when the bell rang. Pat went to open and her mood changed. Lorraine entered with some man in a suit carrying a suitcase, he looked very professional.
Pat: What are you doing here? You not welcomed here.
I was happy to see Neo didn’t kill her.
Lorraine: I’m not happy to be here either.
She sat down.
Neo: So why are you here?
Lorraine: We here for your fathers will, this is his lawyer he was supposed to have long read it had you come to the funeral.
Neo: You didn’t want me there Lorraine
Lawyer: Can we start please.
Lorraine: I don’t know why we even here doing this Don left everything to me, I was there when he signed the will…
Lawyer: Let’s find out.
The lawyer took out the will…
Lawyer: First of all I wanna say sorry for your loss Neo, your father loved you a lot he always talked about you when he came to my office.
Lorraine: Can we start…
Lawyer: Don had all his money from overseas transferred to South Africa. A total amount of 300million.
Everyone was shocked. Don was hella rich…
Lawyer: That money will be shared amongst Neo and his deceased son Sydney, but since Sydney is no more his money will go to Patronella. R150mill for Neo and 150Mill for Patronella.
Lorraine: What! No you must be reading the wrong will…
Lawyer: Neo you will be in charge of all your father’s businesses both overseas and here in SA. He gave you power of attorney. His house, cars, private jet and other things are all yours. And who’s Siba?
Me: I am Siba…
Lawyer: Don said he was very fond of you since from the day he met you at his firm, he saw the great potential you could bring to his company, he left you this cheque to go study a law degree.
He handed me the cheque and it was 5million. I was shocked.
Lawyer: Ohh and before I forget Neo he also wanted you yo have this DVD he said it’s important you watch it should he die.
Neo took the DVD
Him: I’ll watch it upstairs on my laptop
Lawyer: That’s all…
Lorraine: what do you mean, that’s all? This is wrong?
Lawyer: Don came to change his will when he started getting sick, he said he wanted you to get nothing.
Lorraine sat there couldn’t believe what was happening. Neo came back after 10min, all sad and hurt it seemed like he was crying.
Neo: Lorraine I want you to go, go as far away possible.
Lorraine: I won’t go I’m here to fight for what’s mine…
Neo started tearing up.
Him: You killed my father!
Lorraine: What! I would never do that, I loved Don…
Neo: Shut up! Don never had brain tumour you came with that theory to hide your sinister ways! You poisoned him everyday! You slowly but surely were killing him for his money.
Lorraine: I don’t know what you talking about Neo. I would never kill Don.
Neo: He left this DVD to tell me the truth about the nature of his sickness, if you were not my mother I would have called the cops on you right now, but I won’t. I want you to go, leave South Africa! If I ever see you or gear that you around I will have you arrested, I will get the best lawyer and make sure you go to jail for a very very long time. I’ll even have them throw away the key, if I have tooo

Part 38 – Only love can …
Lorraine did leave the country and never heard of her ever again. My little Itumeleng is growing up and I enjoy spending time with him. Patronella and I are busy studying law planning on joining the Don Mare Attorneys. Neo is hardly home, he travels a lot because of the businesses overseas but when his around we spend a lot of time together. We planning on getting married next year in Paris, we building an orphanage for kids whose parents died of Aids and name it after my mother :St Shirley’s Orphanage” I’m slowly but surely recovering from the pelvic gunshot wound, I can walk on my own but not long distances. Life has changed for me, I cry less and laugh more, but one important thing that life has taught me, we can’t help who we fall inlove with and that relationships are not always perfect but aslong as there’s love the that’s will suffice. Neo and I were still madly inlove
