For me personally, the journey of motherhood and life is one of ‘UNBECOMING’. To unbecome, is the process of walking away from the way the world has shaped me to think and act, and to fully embrace all that I was originally designed to be.

Dear Mom, you are wonderfully made, crafted to perfection just the way you are. I encourage you today to walk away from what the world expects of you, ignore the judging eyes and the cruel comments … you are doing a great job. Just be yourself. Embracing the true you, even if it is eccentric, will bring forth the best in you. Be true to the original design, it is what makes you magnificently YOU!

Five things to consider before you allow screen time:
1. When your child is engaged in screen time, opportunities to connect with family members (interaction and building relationships) are taken away. The antidote is a loving connection, face-to-face interaction, eye contact and touch.
2. Screen time inappropriately stimulates the brain by exposing it to flashes of light in rapid increments. Conditioning the brain to react to fast-paced stimuli increases the chances of ADHD. It also stimulates the brain to release feel-good hormones, as screen time provides instant gratification and therefore children can become addicted to electronic devices. The antidote is cognitive stimulation or outdoor play to stimulate the brain in a healthy way.
3. Blue light associated with electronic screens suppresses melatonin production that is necessary for effective sleep. Allowing screen time before bed can diminish sleep quality by increasing the frequency of night-time awakenings and reducing your child’s total hours of sleep. The antidote is to set a bedtime routine that is relaxing and includes elements such as reading a bedtime story or listening to soothing music.
4. Children learn by playing and exploring through their senses in a loving and safe environment. Playing and talking is the basis for cognitive development and growth. Too much screen exposure likely displaces time for other more enriching physical and mental activities, with long-term risks regarding physical activity, brain plasticity and socio-emotional intelligence. The antidote is to allow exposure through your child’s senses to enhance learning and overall development.
5. The risk of exposure to inappropriate content is high. Children cannot distinguish between fiction and reality, and their brain interprets what they see is real. Children also model the behaviour that they see while watching inappropriate content, which can have a negative effect on their behaviour. The antidote is to always monitor and watch a program first before allowing your children to watch. Limit screen time all together.

I can definitely recommend any parent of children displaying BIG emotions, especially during this time of many restrictions, to attend this webinar hosted by my good friend and mentor. I am excited to attend, as a therapist and a mother of a two-year-old..

The good that can come from COVID-19 - MommaMia unites with parents to help in the next 27 days.

On the hearts and lips of people are fear, anxiety and distress, but I would like to propose a different perspective as we enter this strange, uncertain season. I believe that this is a time to reconnect, reload and reconcile.

In this time of crisis, it is so important to unite and serve each other with that which God has placed in our hands. As owner and founder of MommaMia, it would give me great pleasure to make the MommaMia activity app available to families to use for FREE during the proposed school closure.

We’ve all been given the gift of TIME. From tomorrow, our kids will be home with us for 27 days. The question is: Will you treasure this precious gift?

Rebecca Arendell Franks writes the following as they enter day 48 in quarantine in Wuhan, China. “Our family life has never been better. Usually, one weekend is long enough before I’m ready to send each of us back to school or work. But for SEVEN weeks, we’ve been home together with very little outside influences or distraction, forced to reconnect with one another, learn how to communicate better, give each other space, slow down our pace, and be a stronger family than ever before.”

It has been my heart’s desire to get away from the hustle and bustle. To just BE. To sit on my couch and spend quality time with God. To have my kids elbow each other to find a spot on my lap so that we can sit and read together. I want to sing songs with them in the mornings and dance to a silly tune. Instead, we rush to get everyone ready for school, pack bags, get dressed and do a shuffle-run to get everybody out the door and to school on time.

It’s time to PAUSE …

To STOP …

To reconnect … reload … reconcile …

It is my prayer that we as parents use this time to strengthen and unite our families. Sit on the floor and play, snuggle and just BE together. This could be the best 27 days of your life!

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not be terrified or dismayed (intimidated), for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 (Amp)

As the app activities are currently only available for children aged 0-24 months, I will do a daily activity post for our toddlers and older siblings; therefore, visit the MommaMia page first thing in the morning to get your fun activity idea for the day. Use the links below to access the MommaMia app and enter the voucher code for FREE access until 14 April 2020.
