Love this. The sensory system is the birthplace of the emotional system. Worth a read: https://www.facebook.com/share/167kKbLy6u/
āThe sensory system is the birthplace of the emotional system.ā
This beautiful and resonant quoteārecently shared by Dr. Mona Delahooke and echoing the insights of neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrettārings deeply true in both neuroscience and occupational therapy.
But as we read it, we couldnāt help but think of another woman whose originalwork laid the foundation for this understanding decades ago: Dr. A. Jean Ayres, occupational therapist and neuroscientist.
Ayres was the first to map out the profound connections between sensory input, emotional regulation, and participation in daily life ā long before brain scans could prove her theories right. At times her work so original and without modern imaging rejected by many.
Her pioneering work in sensory integration gave us the language, tools, and frameworks to support people who āfeel too muchā or ānot enough.ā
So when a person is overwhelmed by sound, avoids touch, or canāt sit still⦠we feel with themāand we refer to specialists trained to decode this sensory-emotional dance. Most often, thatās an occupational therapist using Ayresā legacy to help families make sense of it all.
We stand on her shoulders. Letās keep her name in the conversation.
