Separation of the sides of the hand is an essential fine motor skill for practically all functional tasks. This graphic has activity ideas to support each side of the hand.

🟣The purple side is the precision side, or dexterity side. Refined use of the fingers and joints on this side of the hand supports motor control needed for tasks like manipulating small objects with the thumb and finger, pinching a pencil, etc.

šŸ”“The red side of the graphic is the power side of the support side of the hand. This is the strength and stability side which is needed to create the arch of the palm when completing precision tasks.

Here is an article for a better explanation and more ways to support separation of the sides of the hand: https://www.theottoolbox.com/separation-of-sides-of-hand-activity/

ā€œThe sensory system is the birthplace of the emotional system.ā€

This beautiful and resonant quote—recently shared by Dr. Mona Delahooke and echoing the insights of neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett—rings deeply true in both neuroscience and occupational therapy.

But as we read it, we couldn’t help but think of another woman whose originalwork laid the foundation for this understanding decades ago: Dr. A. Jean Ayres, occupational therapist and neuroscientist.

Ayres was the first to map out the profound connections between sensory input, emotional regulation, and participation in daily life — long before brain scans could prove her theories right. At times her work so original and without modern imaging rejected by many.
Her pioneering work in sensory integration gave us the language, tools, and frameworks to support people who ā€œfeel too muchā€ or ā€œnot enough.ā€

So when a person is overwhelmed by sound, avoids touch, or can’t sit still… we feel with them—and we refer to specialists trained to decode this sensory-emotional dance. Most often, that’s an occupational therapist using Ayres’ legacy to help families make sense of it all.

We stand on her shoulders. Let’s keep her name in the conversation.
