This week we experienced again a "case" of a patient who had complex psychological/psychiatric problems including bipolar disease. Medication and even weeks of hospitalisation did not work. Knowing just how dangerous and potentially unstable this condition can be, I was reluctant to grant her request to do a day or 2 of fasting. Fasting releases all the neurotransmitters that can cause a "high" so we worry that this extreme may be triggered off.
But, the first day went well. Then, the second day went well. Then, the third day did. Now I observed her breaking the fast in good spirits but not "over the top" like in a manic state.
This parallels our experience over the past 40 years. Yet I always insist that we agree beforehand to get back on food - and medicine where necessary - if the situation appears to become unstable.
Nothing quite like Nature to bring back balance in life!
