🌞 Choosing the Right Sunscreen — Your Skin’s Best Defence!

Here’s what to look for when you’re standing in that long shop aisle wondering which one to grab 👇

🧴 SPF Matters
Always choose SPF 30 or higher — SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays; SPF 50 blocks 98–99%.

☀️ Go for “Broad-Spectrum”
This means the sunscreen protects against both UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays.

💦 Check for Water Resistance
If you’re swimming, sweating, or spending long hours outdoors, look for “water-resistant (40 or 80 minutes)” on the label.

💧Pick the Right Texture for Your Skin Type

🔅Skin Type: Oily / Acne-prone
⏭ ⏭ Recommended Sunscreen Type: Lightweight, gel or matte finish, “non-comedogenic”
🔅Skin Type: Dry
⏭ ⏭ Recommended Sunscreen TypeCream or lotion with moisturising ingredients
🔅Skin Type: Sensitive
⏭ ⏭ Recommended Sunscreen TypeMineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide (gentler on skin)
🔅Skin Type: Normal / Combination
⏭ ⏭ Recommended Sunscreen TypeAny comfortable, broad-spectrum SPF 30+

👶 For Kids
Use broad-spectrum, fragrance-free mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide).

🌞 Too Much Sun? Here’s What Happens When You Skip Protection

We all love soaking up the sun — but too much of it without protection can do more harm than good. Here’s what really happens to your skin (and body) with excessive, UNPROTECTED sun exposure 👇

🔥 1. Sunburn

UV rays damage your skin cells’ DNA, causing inflammation — that’s the redness, pain, and peeling you feel.

🧴 2. Premature Ageing (Photoageing)

The sun breaks down collagen and elastin in your skin, leading to wrinkles, fine lines, sagging, and pigmentation spots long before they’d naturally appear.

☀️ 3. Skin Cancer Risk

Long-term UV exposure is the leading cause of skin cancers, including melanoma, which can be life-threatening.

The good news: early detection through skin checks can save lives.

😎 4. Eye Damage

UV light can cause cataracts, macular degeneration, and even sunburn on the cornea (called photokeratitis).

💧 5. Heat Exhaustion & Dehydration

Prolonged heat exposure without proper hydration can cause dizziness, nausea, headaches, or even heatstroke.

🌡 6. Weakened Immunity

Chronic overexposure can actually suppress your immune system, reducing your body’s ability to fight off some infections.

Stay safe, stay sun-smart — and book your skin check at Wapadrand Medical Centre before the holidays!

🌞 Fun in the Sun — the Safe Way!

💧 SUNSCREEN TIPS & FACTS TO KEEP YOU PROTECTED

As much as we love the warm South African sunshine, UV rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes — even on cloudy days!

Here’s how to make your sunscreen really work for you:

🧴 1. Choose the right SPF

Go for SPF 30 or higher, and make sure it says “broad-spectrum” — that means it protects against both UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays.

⏰ 2. Apply it early

Put sunscreen on 15–30 minutes before you go outside so it can absorb properly.

🔁 3. Reapply often

Every 2–3 hours, and after swimming, sweating, or towel-drying — even if it’s “water resistant.”

👶 4. Don’t forget the easy-to-miss spots

Ears, nose, neck, tops of feet, back of hands, and scalp (especially if you have thinning hair).

🏖 5. Use enough!

Most adults need about a teaspoon for the face and a shot-glass amount (30 ml) for the whole body.

🌤 6. Everyday protection

Make sunscreen part of your daily routine — UV rays can still reach you while driving or sitting near windows.

🩺 7. Check your skin regularly

🌞 Fun in the Sun — the Safe Way!

As much as we love our warm summer days, the sun’s rays can cause long-term skin damage without the right protection.

💛 Here are some simple ways to stay sun-safe:

🧴 Apply SPF 30+ regularly
👒 Wear a wide-brimmed hat
🕶️ Protect your eyes with UV sunglasses
🌳 Avoid the sun during peak hours. Generally, this is between 10 a.m. and 4 pm
💧 Keep hydrated
🌞Use extra caution near water, snow, and sand as they reflect the damaging rays of the sun, which can increase your chance of sunburn.

And don’t forget — regular skin checks can catch problems early.
