St. Augustine of Hippo (354–430)
St. Augustine of Hippo was a Christian theologian and philosopher whose writings greatly influenced Western Christianity and philosophy. Born in Tagaste (modern-day Algeria), Augustine lived a life of worldly indulgence before converting to Christianity at the age of 31. His most famous works include Confessions, an autobiographical account of his conversion, and The City of God, which addresses the relationship between Christianity and the secular world. Augustine's thoughts on grace, original sin, and the nature of God shaped much of Christian doctrine. He became the Bishop of Hippo in North Africa and is recognized as a Doctor of the Church.
