Eye Contact with a teeny baby or a child. It’s not as easy as you’d think. It’s a natural thing to do, and it’s a special moment of connecting beyond speech.
It’s something I look out for - the moment a parent and child arrive for a treatment - what level of contact is there, through the eyes?
A shy child will give the sneaky side eye, or quickly look away when you look at them. As the treatment goes on, the eye contact gets stronger and clearer.
But here’s the modern challenge - the child who arrives at a new place, and doesn’t look around at all. Who spends an hour surrounded by toys and a new lady , who is physically touching them - and makes no eye contact at all. Absolutely and definitely a flag which needs to be raised and addressed
The really complicated part? The baby/young child who arrives, fully immersed in the tablet or Phone, their brain and senses on an over-load.
No tablets/devices in the treatment room , can we make healthy human contact ?
If healthy human contact causes a fuss and anxiety for a child, we need to talk about that .
And then get to work on stimulating the brain to be able to form connection, through the eyes and I to the world
