Today, on the 23rd of September, we celebrate the International Day of Sign Languages, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of sign language in ensuring the human rights of Deaf Communities.

However, it’s disheartening to acknowledge that in 2024, only four countries in Africa, which are South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and Uganda actually recognize Sign Language as an official language.

With 45 countries on this continent, it’s a shame that such a vital native language for Deaf individuals remains under-recognized in most nations. There's still a long way to go in achieving inclusivity for all.

If you speak, talk, write, present, or educate about accessibility and disability inclusion in any digital format (think about this for a moment in today's world)....

Use alt-text for your images

Refrain from emoji extravaganzas

Provide accurate and usable captions

Know what closed captions are and are not

Use CamelCase hashtags so they are readable (CapitalizeTheFirstLetterOfEachWordEvenIfThatReallyIsPascal)

Use headers for structure in your documents and communications

Make sure your documents and presentations are accessible for people who use assistive technologies.

If you speak, talk, write, present, or educate about accessibility in any digital format do these things.

If you have not yet, today's a great day to start.

Pick one or two and commit to making this HOW you communicate ALWAYS.

Make a date/time to add one or two more and commit to making these HOW you communicate ALWAYS.

Accessibility includes accessible communications.
Accessibility means inclusive communications.

How it started VS How it's going... Disclaimer: since we aren't able to share a complete product, the one ready for manufacturing, the product assembled on the right is the prototype reiteration we did in April 2019. We just couldn't resist this challenge🤟

GSM Association, an industry organisation that represents the interests of mobile network operators worldwide ran a study on assistive devices from Africa. Senso was amongst these African companies that participated, representing South Africa. An honour for us being a part of this great body of work. Please view the study on the link below when you can.

Hopefully, every member of our community here remains safe and well. Sometime last month, we wrote to the Disability Insider, a publication based in Italy. Here is what we wrote, we'd be happy to answer any question you may have:

The product’s idea came out of my frustration when I was looking for a sound assistive device that a family member who is hard of hearing could use in order to be alert to life saving sounds and other important sounds like door knock, alarms, forced entry sounds like window breaking, items making ...

Trevor Noah's success to the global community as a comedian is a great proof that humour knows no boundary. Here are three other examples of comedians who posses some great humour that certainly knows no boundaries, there's Kathy Buckley, billed as "America's first Hearing Impaired Comedienne", one of her videos is here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rV8uqf1xhRI and she's really funny with how she narrates how she's experienced her world. There's our very own, Mduduzi Deaf Comedian, check his page here on Facebook for some really funny skits. We also have Lee Ridley, aka Lost Voice, check one of his popular routine on Britain's Got Talent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsqInns6LXQ

We came across this article from the page of the Deaf Empowerment Firm and thought we should share it in our community here as well:

Many people assume that subtitles/captions are mainly for d/Deaf people. But there are a number of benefits can be applicable to more people than you think.
