Fat grafting is a surgical procedure where fat is removed from one part of the body (through gentle liposuction), purified, and then injected into another area to restore volume, improve contour, or enhance appearance.
•Common Uses of Fat Grafting
Face: to restore youthful volume, soften wrinkles, and improve contours (e.g., cheeks, under-eyes, temples).
Breast: Cosmetic augmentation (modest, natural increase in size). Breast reconstruction (after mastectomy or lumpectomy). Correction of irregularities after implant surgery.
Buttocks: for natural contouring.
Hands: to rejuvenate by restoring volume and reducing vein/tendon visibility.
Scar & contour deformities: to soften and correct irregularities after trauma or surgery.
•Benefits
Uses the patient’s own tissue (no synthetic filler, low risk of rejection).
Natural look and feel.
Long-lasting results (although not all transferred fat survives).
Improves both donor and recipient areas (removes unwanted fat and enhances another).
•Considerations
Not all transferred fat survives — typically 50–70% remains permanently. Surgeons may slightly overfill to account for this.
Multiple sessions may be needed for optimal results.
Results vary depending on individual healing, lifestyle, and the treated area.
Recovery involves some swelling and bruising at both donor and recipient sites.
•Risks
Fat resorption (loss of some volume).
Cysts or small lumps (if fat doesn’t integrate properly).
Infection or bleeding (rare).
Fat necrosis (areas where fat doesn’t survive).
Very rare but serious: fat embolism (especially with large-volume transfers).
