Situated in Mooiplaats, Pretoria East, Moya Stud is just a 35 minute drive from the North Rand Training Centre in Randjesfontein and 40 minutes from the Equicare Hospital, in Blue Hills, Johannesburg. The farm is owned and managed by qualified Veterinary Nurse Claudia Snyckers, who lives on the property and who is once again offering expert post-operative care, recuperation and rehabilitation.

Moya Stud is also now offering spelling for racehorses, in our purpose-built, safe and spacious post-and-rail paddocks, which all have ample, well-established grazing. We also have facilities for small paddock turnout and lunging, up near the stable block. We have twenty large (3m x 3m) and well ventilated brick stables, including boxes suitable to board colts and entires. Your horse will be able to relax or recuperate in a safe and comfortable environment - our first priority is always the wellbeing of the horses in our care.

“Spelling. No, it is not something you do at an English castle, but rather something we do in Australia with our horses to allow them to rest. I am a great advocate of spelling and resting horses, and just as we humans benefit greatly from a change in scenery and a holiday, horses flourish when they are sent for a spell. In Australia it is very hot for most of the year and the Aussie sun does wonders for our horses when they are allowed to relax and rest. They come back in from their spells generally many kilograms heavier and often several centimetres taller.

“Timing is everything in racing and an often misunderstood training tool is a spell and the value created by giving a race horse a spell.

Thoroughbreds are no different from us. You know when you’ve hit your stride at just the right time – it’s when you nailed that presentation at work or when your footy team really connected their play just as the finals loomed. When the timing is spot-on your thoroughbred is winning that pinnacle race you have built your preparation around.

So when is the right time to spell?

One Australian trainer is famous for sticking to the mantra “ I always try to send a horse to the paddock for a spell with a bit of fuel still left in the tank!”

This means that the horse can go for a break still feeling well often after it has run a top race, maybe even have just won a race. The rationale being many horses spell better whilst still on a high mentally and physically. It is a case of making sure you don’t completely run out of petrol: refilling the tank is easy but towing your car to the nearest petrol station is not so easy.”

Timing is everything in racing and an often misunderstood training tool is a spell and the value created by spelling a racehorse at the right time.
