How to reverse heart failure on a KETO lifestyle
Dr. Eric Westman will present on this important topic, based on his clinical experience and current research at the Symposium For Metabolic Health in less than 2 weeks
Title of Presentation: Reversal of Heart Failure with a Ketogenic Diet
Learning Objectives:
1) To enumerate the foods eaten on a low carbohydrate, ketogenic diet
2) To review the basic physiology of the heart in regard to fuel use of the heart muscle
3) To review several case studies of the reversal of heart failure with a low carb, keto diet
Abstract:
Cardiac muscle is mainly fueled by fatty acids and ketones, and insulin resistance is considered an underlying cause of heart failure.
Using a ketogenic diet to improve insulin resistance and lose weight would in theory be useful to treat heart failure and obesity.
In this talk, several clinical case studies of reversal of heart failure using a low carbohydrate, ketogenic diet will be presented.
Further research is needed to expand this clinical experience and to determine if a ketogenic diet is helpful to improve cardiac function independently of weight loss.
