We’re excited to share our first Sanctuary blog of 2026!
In this article, we reflect on our final workshop of last year and unpack practical tools for navigating difficult conversations, regulating emotions, and standing firm when things feel challenging.
If you’ve ever walked away from a conversation wishing you’d responded differently — this one’s for you.
As we move through the beginning of a new year, it’s easy to focus on outcomes — success, achievement, recognition.
But as one of our counsellors at The Sanctuary often reminds us, "Aim to be a person of value".
When growth is rooted in values rather than pressure, we create space for healthier patterns.
Lasting change doesn’t come from chasing more.
It comes from becoming more grounded, more intentional, and more aligned with what truly matters.

Personal growth is meant to support your life, not drain it.
We all want change.
But lasting change rarely comes from pressure or perfection.
You don’t have to do everything at once to be moving forward.
Change often begins with faith, patience, and small steps taken consistently.

Most resolutions fail because the deeper roots of our patterns often go unexamined.
Instead of asking, “What do I want to change?”
try asking,
“What has kept me stuck in the past?”
What keeps us stuck often lives beneath the surface.. in repeated patterns, emotional triggers, old beliefs, and unmet needs.
Awareness opens the door to real healing. That’s where lasting change begins.

A new year doesn’t ask you to forget where you’ve been, it invites you to carry your story forward with hope. Every challenge you’ve faced has shaped your strength, your resilience, and your ability to begin again.
Whether you’ve been walking through addiction, relationship breakdown, grief, or simply waiting for things to change.. this year holds room for growth, healing, and renewed hope.
Sometimes new beginnings start when we step outside the boundary lines we’ve lived within for so long.
This could be the year things begin to shift -- not through pretending the past didn’t happen, but by choosing to face it with support, courage, and hope.

Not because everything is perfect, but because there are still moments of goodness worth noticing.
A kind conversation.
A shared meal.
A quiet breath of peace.
Even small smiles matter.

Just a reminder at this time of the year;
Be kind to yourself.
When you speak to yourself with kindness instead of criticism, the weight of shame begins to lift.
Let go of shame.
Make room for kindness.
And start each day anew.

Take a moment and ask yourself:
• What do you wish you had done this year?
• What have you been putting off for “someday” or “next year”?
Here’s the truth:
You don’t need perfect confidence to take a step.
You just need willingness.
Start with one small action toward the life you want.
Start today — not in January, not when everything feels perfect, not when fear disappears.
Small action builds hope.
Hope builds courage.
And courage weakens the fear that keeps you stuck.
Your next chapter can begin now.

Don’t forget the people you call family

This is your reminder that you’re allowed to pause.
You’re allowed to slow down.
You’re allowed to be human.

The end of the year can feel like a blur — lists, deadlines, expectations.
Here’s a gentle pause in the middle of it all.
Take a breath.
Check in with yourself today

Forgetting small things,
Feeling irritable for no reason,
Wanting to be alone more,
Struggling to feel excited about anything,
Feeling overwhelmed by simple decisions.
Be gentle with yourself — and if you’re feeling stuck, support is only a conversation away.

The Sanctuary Christian Counselling Centre known as “The Sanctuary” was birthed out of a vision laid upon Olga Fredericks heart.
The prophecy given to Olga in 2009 was just one of the many confirmations along the way that was given to her. “God is calling you to establish something in a country that is not your own. It is a small seed. It may be something small but it is some big thing that is latent and dormant. It is a vision waiting to be birthed.”
We are part of Global Mandate Wholistic Care Centres (see www.globalcarecentres.co.za). We are also affiliated to the Harare Christian Counselling Centre in Zimbabwe (www.christiancounsellingcentre.net)
We look forward with faith and anticipation to your participating in God's vision for healing in this land through His church as we have a heart for our community and a passion to see all come and feel the love of family.
We are a registered non-profit organisation with the department of social development. We are also run by a board of trustees from different churches, making us a interdenominational organization.
We offer affordable, relatable, honest and love-filled biblical based counselling, training, prayer ministry and retreats to anyone who wants it.
