Pioneering complex liver resections with anatomy-driven, clamp-free approaches π¬π₯
On 19 September 2025 a No Clamp Right Hepatectomy was successfully performed at RPH.
Duration: 7hrs
Lead Surgeon: Dr Imraan Sardiwalla
The procedure involved resection of metastatic cancer in the right liver lobe, using the CUSA Clarity (Baroque Medical) to split the liver along the middle hepatic vein without inflow occlusion or clamping. This clamp-free technique is particularly protective in livers heavily pretreated with chemotherapy, reducing the risk of post-hepatectomy liver failure and supporting faster recovery. By avoiding portal triad clamping, bowel swelling is minimised, resulting in less postoperative pain and discomfort. The approach also provides precise anatomical definition, standardisation, and stepwise confirmation, leading to reduced bleeding and fewer bile leaks.
Similar procedures are now routinely performed and underscore both the technical expertise of the team and the RPHβs capacity to manage complex, high acuity liver cases.
