𝑳𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒑𝒊𝒄 𝑪𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒆𝒚𝒄𝒚𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒎𝒚

The gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ situated under the liver in the upper-right section of your abdomen. The gallbladder stores bile made by the liver, which helps digest fats in the foods you eat.

Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery (cholecystectomy) removes the gallbladder and gallstones through several small cuts (incisions) in the abdomen. The surgeon inflates your abdomen with air or carbon dioxide in order to see clearly.

Why would I need surgery?

You may need gallbladder surgery if stones have been detected in your gallbladder. Gallstones can block the flow of bile in your digestive system, causing jaundice bloating, nausea, vomiting, and pain in your abdomen, shoulder, back, or chest. A laparoscopic cholecystectomy (or gallbladder surgery) is a surgery during which Dr Swart removes your gallstones using minimally invasive surgical techniques.

What does the surgery involve?

Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery (cholecystectomy) removes the gallbladder and gallstones through several small cuts (incisions) in the abdomen. Dr Pieter Swart inflates your abdomen with air or carbon dioxide in order to see clearly, he then inserts a lighted scope attached to a video camera (laparoscope) into one incision near the belly button. Dr Pieter Swart then uses a video monitor as a guide while inserting surgical instruments into the other incisions to remove your gallbladder or gallstones.

You may need to stay a night in the hospital after your procedure for observation.

𝑺𝒚𝒎𝒑𝒕𝒐𝒎𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑮𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔

Gallstones may cause no signs or symptoms during the early stages but If a gallstone lodges in a duct and causes a blockage, the resulting signs and symptoms may include:

•Sudden and rapidly intensifying pain in the upper right portion of your abdomen
•Sudden and rapidly intensifying pain in the center of your abdomen, just below your breastbone
•Back pain between your shoulder blades
•Pain in your right shoulder
•Nausea or vomiting
•Belching
•Onset of jaundice
•An increase in body temperature
•Flatulence
•Body weakness
•Heartburn

Gallstone pain may last several minutes to a few hours.

People who experience symptoms from their gallstones usually require gallbladder removal surgery. Gallstones that don't cause any signs and symptoms typically don't need treatment.

Dr Swart also has a huge interest in minimal invasive surgery, so much that he has opened his own Gastroenterology unit in 2019, where he performs colonoscopies and gastroscopies daily as outpatients.

𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑽𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒗𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒔?

Varicose veins are large, raised, swollen blood vessels that twist and turn. They usually develop in the legs and can be seen through the skin. Spider veins are smaller, red, purple, and blue vessels that also twist and turn. Spider veins are easily visible through the skin, as well.

Spider veins occur when blood pools in veins near the surface of the skin. They can be caused by heredity, obesity, trauma, and fluctuations in hormone levels. In many cases, the exact cause is not known. They tend to become more numerous with age, and are common among people over 30 and in pregnant women.

The most common treatment for venous insufficiency is prescription compression stockings. These special elastic stockings apply pressure at the ankle and lower leg. They help improve blood flow and can reduce leg swelling. Dr Swart may give you medication to treat the symptoms of varicose veins, including swelling, pain, and treatment involves compression stockings, exercise or procedures to close or remove the veins.

Other nonsurgical treatments for varicose veins and spider veins include Sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is the most common treatment for smaller varicose veins and spider veins.

Other forms of varicose vein treatments include:
•Laser treatment
•Catheter-assisted procedures using radio frequency or laser energy
•High ligation
•Ambulatory phlebectomy and vein stripping and Endoscopic vein surgery to name but a few.

We have a fully equipped, state of the art, in-rooms unit and recovery area, where venous ablasions are performed.

Dr Swart is assisted by his full time Anaesthetist Dr Alta Marais and his technician during all of these procedures. Dr Swart has successfully carried out many procedures in this Unit since it's inception in October 2019.
