It's Diabetic Awareness Month, and Erané had the privilege of seeing Jurgens Koen, a nine-year-old diabetic patient, for his annual visual assessment.
It is crucial for all individuals with diabetes, children and adults alike, to have regular visual assessments because diabetes can quietly affect the eyes long before symptoms appear.
Elevated blood sugar levels can lead to changes in the retina, fluctuating vision, and long-term complications such as diabetic retinopathy, which is a leading cause of preventable blindness.
Routine visual assessments allow for early detection and timely treatment, helping preserve vision and ensuring that patients maintain clear, comfortable sight for work, learning, and daily life.
It is also important for us as optometrists to remind parents and children that visual assessments are non-invasive and don't need to be a traumatic experience.
If you would like to book a visual assessment for yourself or your child, please contact us at 014 010 0035 or 014 592 0580.
Your vision, our passion.
