THIS IS SO SAD

Middelburg's own house of abominations
It's not just Springs that has a house of horrors. In Middelburg a mother of three children pleaded guilty to r**e, child neglect and failure to report sexual offense's.

The six year old boy was unconscious with an empty stomach, sick of jaundice and found on the floor between dog stools.
A social worker's report, presented to the court, revealed hideous neglect and abuse:

• Her neglected baby boy was found with ticks and other insects in his cot.

• The eight-year-old daughter was allegedly r**ed by her father so often that she pleaded with police officers to never send her back home. The father arrived at www.mobserver.co.za 's offices and denied aggressively that his children were neglected. Shortly thereafter he and his wife disappeared.

• The girl was never sent to school and was at the level of a three-year-old when welfare had removed her.

• She was found with bloody buttocks, without underwear, by welfare.

• The newborn baby has been treated in Life Midmed Hospital for more than a week. Animal hair had to be removed from the child's mouth and nasal passage before paramedics could apply treatment.

The woman will be sentenced later and will face life imprisonment. Her husband appeared briefly in court on Thursday during which his hearing date would be determined. Their names are prevented from being published to protect the children.

The couple were both detained after fleeing from Middelburg to family in eMalahleni. The court identified them as a flight risk and bail was refused.

All three children were placed in foster care and showed good progress.

The children's grandmother, who stayed with the family in the house, was not charged, despite threatening to put the family's dogs on the welfare worker when the children were fetched.

The father has been charged on 4 counts of r**e, child abuse and charges of sexual abuse.

Five killed, six injured in two separate accidents in Carletonville

16:00 24/06/2018
Derrick Spies, Correspondent
Five people were killed and six others injured in two separate accidents in Carletonville over the weekend.

ER24 spokesperson, Ineke van Huyssteen, said two people died and five sustained injuries in the first accident, which occurred at around 22:00 on Saturday evening when two vehicles collided on Blybank road in Carletonville.

She said when paramedics arrived, they found a vehicle in the road and another vehicle partially in a field.

"Upon further assessment, paramedics found two people entrapped in the vehicle. Unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could do for them and they were declared dead at the scene," she said.

Van Huyssteen said five other people had been found to have minor to moderate injuries.

"ER24, as well as another medical service on the scene, transported the patients to hospital for further medical care," she said.

Second accident

Van Huyssteen said three more people died and another sustained moderate injuries in a second accident, when their car rolled on the P111/R501 road in Carletonville at around 03:00 on Sunday morning.

She said paramedics found the patients lying across the road.

"It is believed that they were ejected from the vehicle. Three patients were declared dead at the scene," she said.

Van Huyssteen said another medical service on scene transported the injured passenger to hospital for further medical care.

"The exact circumstances surrounding both incidents were not known to our paramedics, but police were on the scene for further investigations," she said.

Traditional healer makes history by opening traditional hospital

19:43 20/06/2018 Sandile Mbili

KWA ZULU-NATAL– A traditional healer from Ingwavuma in the north of KZN has made history by forming a private hospital in Bhambanana area at Mhlabuyalingana.

Dr Mxolisi Nkomonde (33), who is known as Dr Mkhulu, has opened a traditional hospital called Dr K Traditional Hospital, where he treats patients who are in need of traditional treatment.

Many lives have been lost

He came up with the idea of opening this kind of hospital after seeing many people suffering from diseases caused by witchcraft, but were unable to get the correct kind of help and ended up dying.

"So many lives have been lost in hospitals. It is not that these hospitals are not working, but the nature of illness is a factor which western doctors do not understand or treat. I heal illnesses like swelling ankles, piles, hallucinations, wounds, and many more. I divide my patients regarding their gender and illnesses," explained Dr Mkhulu.

The hospital was officially opened in January and is fully operational and growing.

He also clarified that the hospital is registered with the Department of Health (DoH) to ensure everything he does is within the law. The hospital has about 20 employees, five buildings with 24 beds and three ambulances used to transport patients.

"I do refer some of my patients to Mosvold Hospital if I see symptoms of HIV, cancer or TB which are diseases I cannot cure," Dr Mkhulu explained.

Community in favour of hospital

President of the Traditional Healers Council, Sazi Mhlongo, said he was pleased that the DoH was not against the traditional hospital.

Mosvold Hospital manager Vusi Vilakazi, asked about the patients he receives from the traditional hospital, said he could not comment on the matter.

KZN Health Department spokeswoman Ncumisa Mafunda said they had never received any application from Dr Mkhulu, and had never issued him with a license.

"Although the Department does work with traditional healers in some ways, we mostly only have contact when they refer patients after noting that they are showing symptoms of HIV and TB. Then they refer them to healthcare facilities," said Mafunda.

Community members appear to be in favour of the traditional hospital. Bhongo Nombekela (32) said Dr Mkhulu was working hard to help the community.

"My foot was sore for so long. I went to clinics, hospitals and doctors but I couldn't find help. Then I went to Dr K Traditional Hospital where I received help. He knows what he is doing," said Ntombi Makhathini (43). – Health-e News.

A man in his forties was shot in the hand during a cash-in-transit heist in Hillbrow, Johannesburg on Tuesday.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said that when the paramedics arrived on the scene, a man who is believed to be the driver of a small truck was found with a gunshot wound in the hand.

"He explained to paramedics that his vehicle was behind the security vehicle when a shot was fired and entered his vehicle through the dashboard," Meiring said.

He was treated on the scene and later transported to a nearby hospital for further care. No further injuries were reported.

'We fear for our lives': Cash-in-transit guards call for more protection

Hundreds of security guards working in the money transportation industry marched in major cities across South Africa on Tuesday after a spate of brazen heists that have rocked the industry and the country in recent months.

They are calling for more visible policing, increased reaction times to robberies and more effective intelligence gathering.

The scourge of cash-in-transit robberies reached a boiling point last week, with Police Minister Bheki Cele announcing new plans to bring down the well organised and heavily armed gangs carrying out the heists, which are robbing the country of millions of rands in cash.

SCROLL: Cash-in-transit guards hand over memorandum, response expected within 14 days

In Johannesburg, cash-in-transit security employees handed over a memorandum listing their demands to the Department of Community Safety.

"The recent increasing attacks on our members in the cash-in-transit sectors compels us to bring the following demands to your attention," the secretary general of Motor Transport Workers Union of South Africa, Mdumiseni Mabaso said.

"Without these workers, South Africa could not function and they need to be protected whilst performing their duties in such a crucial and important sector of the economy."

Strike on the cards

They further called on the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development to "deal harshly with convicted criminals" and ensure investigations were done properly to "minimise criminals walking free due to lack of evidence".

"We will be monitoring the situation closely, and if we do not see any improvements or adherence to our demands within the next few months we will have to reserve our rights in terms of the labour laws, which could result in members withholding their labour," Mabaso said.

The memorandum was accepted and signed by a representative from the department who promised workers that there would be a meeting with all stakeholders to deal with their demands.

David Baloyi, a security guard employed by Fidelity, said they were in constant fear of being killed.

"Since the beginning of this year, we are being killed. The criminals are bombing us and it is putting our lives in danger," he said.

"We have families that we have to live for. We fear for our lives and that is why we have come together today."

When asked who may be behind the recent spike in the attacks, Ephraim Ralibona, who works for SBV, said: "I heard the investigators say some of those involved in the heists were some of their members (police), but we are not sure because they said some of the thugs who were involved were police officers and some of our colleagues."

Colleagues killed

In Cape Town, Federation of Unions of SA general secretary Dennis George said cash-in-transit workers had been under a sustained attack since the beginning of the year.

"There have been 157 different incidents of cash-in-transit heists this year alone," he said.

One driver, Craig Nicholls, who had been driving for 30 years, said robbers who had wanted to exact revenge on him tracked him down at home.

"My wife was inside the house and heard the shot go off. I was outside at my car when they shot me," he said. "They only got me in the leg."

He added: "Many of the guys that I have worked with for years are dead."

More protection needed

Cash-in-transit employees also marched through Durban's streets, calling for an end to the killing of their colleagues, and more protection from the police.

Themba Mbhele, who has worked with Fidelity Cash Solutions for 15 years, told News24 that he had eight children he had to take care of.

He said he was not afraid of dying, but of being broke.

"If I die, my family will be broke and nobody will take care of them and send them to school," he said.

He said Cele "should get rid of corrupt policemen in the SAPS, and he must have an input in fighting the recent scourge of heists in our country".

At a briefing on Wednesday last week, Cele said police had arrested 13 suspects connected to recent heists over a 24-hour period.

"Criminals have declared the war, so they must get ready to fight the war. All of the units are out of the barracks, all of the units are on the streets, we will be responding much quicker, and responding much more decisively," he said

Brazilian newborn survives seven hours buried alive
12:04 08/06/2018

A newborn indigenous baby girl in Brazil survived seven hours of being buried alive by her family, prosecutors said on Thursday, following her rescue.

A nurse alerted authorities on finding out that the girl had been buried shortly after her birth on Tuesday in the Xingu National Park in Mato Grosso state, which is home to many of Brazil's tribal peoples.

Police released a video showing officers digging sand out of a shallow hole at night, then pulling out the naked baby, umbilical chord still attached.

The baby's great-grandmother, a member of the Tamayura tribe, was detained, state prosecutor Paulo Roberto do Prado said.

"We are investigating whether it was an attempted infanticide or if she thought the baby was dead," he told AFP.

Despite spending seven hours underground, "the information we have is that the child is doing well", do Prado said.

The baby was brought to Cuiaba, the Mato Grosso state capital, on Wednesday and placed in a neonatal intensive care unit.

Investigators interviewed the family in the territory near the town of Canarana. An anthropologist, psychologist and representatives of Funai – the government body in charge of indigenous affairs – took part.

They wanted to clarify if there were "anthropological issues" in the case linked to indigenous customs, do Prado said.

The family told police the baby fell on its head after her mother gave birth in the bathroom. However, the authorities suspected a cover-up.

"Since the father refuses to recognise the child and the mother is only 15, there are suspicions that they had tried to kill the newborn," state police said.

A 17-year-old North West girl has been rescued from a suspected brothel after allegedly being kidnapped and forced into prostitution, the Hawks said on Thursday.

Her alleged abductors briefly appeared in the Lichtenburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of abduction, r**e, sexual exploitation and trafficking. They cannot be identified until they have pleaded to the charges.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Tlangelani Rikhotso said the two women were arrested in an operation last week.

The women, aged 20 and 22, allegedly abducted the teen at a hiking spot in Lichtenburg on April 8.

"It is alleged the two suspects… forced [the teenager] into prostitution, drugs and alcohol consumption," Rikhotso said in a statement.

The Hawks responded to a tip-off and, with the assistance of the tactical response unit, found the girl at the house.

She has been taken to a place of safety.

The women will remain in custody until their next court appearance on June 27.

Suspected Hermanus serial ra**st arrested

11:34 31/05/2018

Tammy Petersen

A suspected serial ra**st, who allegedly attacked his victims at an old dumping site in Hermanus, has been apprehended, Western Cape police confirmed on Thursday.

The man, who previously had been released due to a lack of evidence, was rearrested last week after his DNA linked him to 11 r**es.

The suspect is believed to have prowled the Zwelihle area between September 2015 and March 2018.

Within six months of the first r**e being reported, five cases with the same modus operandi had been handed over to the investigative unit.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said the victims said an unknown man in his mid to late 20s had approached them as they walked alone, and had forced them at knifepoint to walk to a deserted area, where they were robbed and r**ed.

"Most of the crime scenes were at an old dumping area known as The Mop. In most cases, the suspect had a balaclava or stocking over his face, which made identifying the suspect very difficult," Van Wyk said.

All the cases were linked with the same DNA.

Similar cases were reported during the following months.

Van Wyk said a man acting suspiciously was spotted by Hermanus police officers on patrol in the vicinity of The Mop on March 4 at about 00:30.

"He was found in possession of a balaclava, a stocking, a knife and a roll of toilet paper."

The 29-year-old man was arrested and held for most recent r**e, which had occurred the night before.

"Due to a lack of evidence, he was subsequently released. Fortunately a buccal swab was taken from him and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory. On May 24, the DNA result linked the suspect to 11 cases."

The man was arrested the next day and appeared in the Hermanus Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The case was postponed until June 4.

He remains in custody.

INTERESTING TO KNOW:

Domestic Violence

Are you worried about how you are being treated by your partner or husband, boyfriend or girlfriend, a family member or a carer?

Abuse in relationships, which is also called domestic violence, is any behaviour that causes physical, sexual or emotional damage, or causes you to live in fear. Non-physical forms of abuse, like emotional or threatening abuse, can be just as damaging as physical violence.

HOW MIGHT THIS BE AFFECTING ME?

All forms of abuse have damaging consequences. Your confidence can become worn down by abuse.

Children are also affected if they live in a home where there is abuse. Remember, you’re not to blame for the abuse. You have a right to feel safe and to live a life free from intimidation.

WHAT CAN I DO?

No one likes, asks for or wants to live with abuse or violence, but working out what to do, or whether to stay or leave can be hard.

The first thing is to understand that the way you are being treated is not okay. The most important warning sign is how you feel – do you feel happy, safe, respected or cared for? If you don’t always feel like this, there’s something wrong. Trust your instincts.

Remember, abuse is not your fault. Don’t blame yourself.

TALK TO SOMEONE YOU TRUST.

You don’t have to go through this alone. Finding the strength to talk to someone else can be hard, but many people who have experienced abuse say that the most helpful thing was getting support from someone else. Talking about the abuse and how you feel can help you decide what to do. Talk to a friend, a family member or a counsellor. Whoever you talk to shouldn’t judge you. Counsellors are experienced in helping people to deal with abuse. They won’t pressure you to leave, or to take any action unless you are ready.

Understand that abuse and family violence affects children

If abuse or violence is happening to you, your children will most likely be aware of it, even if they don’t witness it directly. There are things you can do to help your children.

YOUR SAFETY IS IMPORTANT

It’s important to think carefully about your safety and prepare yourself in case you or your children are placed in physical danger.

It’s against the law for someone to physically hurt you, threaten you, or to coerce or force you into sexual contact.

If you are in immediate danger, or if you have been physically or sexually assaulted, threatened or stalked, you can call the police. If there’s sufficient evidence, they should lay criminal charges.
