How often should emergency showers and eyewash stations be tested?

It’s something that often gets overlooked - until it’s needed.

According to ANSI Z358.1, emergency eyewash stations and safety showers should be activated weekly.

This isn’t just for compliance. Weekly testing helps to:

✅Verify proper water flow

✅Flush out stagnant water

✅Check for blockages or valve issues

✅Ensure the unit will operate instantly in an emergency

A more thorough inspection should also be carried out periodically to confirm full compliance with performance requirements.

In an emergency, there’s no time to troubleshoot.

These units need to work immediately, every time.

When last were yours tested?

Not all "flammable cabinets" are compliant.

We regularly see cabinets in use that were never designed for flammable storage, are damaged, or lack basic safety features like spill containment.

This creates a false sense of compliance and unnecessary risk.
We recently put together an article on flammable cabinet requirements in South Africa, including what to look for and where most sites go wrong.

Our article is available on our website:

Different types of eyewash stations - are you using the right one?

Not all eyewash stations are the same, and the right choice depends on your environment.

Plumbed eyewash stations are installed in fixed locations and are connected to a water supply. These are typically used in higher-risk areas where chemicals and other hazardous substances are handled regularly.

There are different options depending on your needs and setup:

Wall-mounted units
Pedestal units
Combinations units (which also have a shower)
Portable Unit

Portable eyewash stations offer flexibility where plumbing isn’t available. They’re ideal for remote or temporary work areas, but they have limited capacity and require more regular inspection.

Both types serve the same purpose - immediate response to chemical/hazardous material exposure.

A key factor is accessibility. Eyewash stations should be reachable within 10 seconds of a hazard to reduce the risk of serious injury.

Choosing the right type comes down to your site layout, risk level, and infrastructure.

IBC SECONDARY CONTAINMENT - WHY IT MATTERS

IBC flowbins are widely used for storing chemicals, oils, and other hazardous liquids. But one thing that’s often overlooked is secondary containment.

A full IBC typically holds around 1000 litres. If that volume is released due to a valve failure, impact damage, or slow leak, it can quickly spread across a facility and enter stormwater systems.

This is where secondary containment becomes critical.

The law is that containment systems for single containers should hold 110% of the largest container. For a single IBC, that means your containment solution should be able to hold at least 1100 litres. When more than 1 container is present either 110% of the largest container or 25% of the total volume, whichever is greater must be used for minimum secondary containment size.

Spill pallets designed for IBCs provide a simple and effective solution. They capture leaks before they reach the floor, helping to prevent environmental contamination and costly cleanup.

For sites handling multiple IBCs, larger containment systems or bunded areas are required to meet capacity requirements.

Another important factor is placement. IBCs should always be stored:

Away from stormwater drains
On level, stable surfaces
In areas where leaks can be easily identified and managed

Even a small leak from an IBC can escalate into a serious issue if not contained properly.

Secondary containment is not just about compliance - it’s about protecting your facility, your staff, and the environment from preventable incidents.

Used your spill kit?

Most sites do this wrong:
➡️They replace the entire unit unnecessarily
➡️They partially restock (non-compliant risk)
➡️They don't restore the full absorbent capacity after a spill.

If the Wheelie Bin, Broom, and Shovel aren't damaged, you likely only need a replenishment kit.

We explain the in's and out's of replenishment kits here:

Over the past six months, Spill Doctor has undertaken an expansion programme to better serve our growing customer base nationwide. As part of this initiative, three members of our internal sales team have been redeployed to strategic regions to provide a more efficient, hands-on level of service.

With our client base continuing to grow and becoming increasingly geographically dispersed, we recognised the need to place experienced personnel closer to our customers. This allows us to strengthen relationships, improve response times, and provide on-site support where it matters most. We are therefore pleased to announce the following appointments:

The Gauteng region is now serviced by Don Craucamp, who is based in Boksburg and covers Gauteng and its surrounding areas. Don has been with Spill Doctor since 2024 and was initially based at our Salt Rock offices for his first nine months before relocating back to Johannesburg in October 2025. With over 15 years’ experience in the B2B sector, Don is passionate about helping clients meet both local and international regulations, ensuring the safe and compliant storage and handling of flammable liquids.

The Western Cape region will now be serviced by Frankie Samons, who is based in Cape Town. Frankie joined Spill Doctor in 2021 and has been a part of our internal sales team at the Salt Rock office. Over the years, he has built strong relationships with clients through email, WhatsApp, and video consultations, providing accurate and reliable advice. Frankie will now take this experience into the field, conducting site visits and meeting clients face-to-face to further enhance safety and compliance across their operations.

In KwaZulu-Natal, Kurt Raaff will now cover the region after spending five years developing his expertise within our Salt Rock sales office. Having supported a wide range of customers across various industries from behind the scenes, Kurt will now be on the road meeting clients and conducting site visits. Known for his attention to detail and commitment to customer satisfaction, Kurt has helped many clients avoid costly fines and compliance issues over the years and will continue to do so through direct, on-site support.
