Lately I've been reflecting on the essence of integrity and the courage required to consistently function in a principled manner.
Sometimes one's conscience can trigger debilitating distress. Sometimes a restless conscience can be a call to action and a reminder of what you truly stand for, especially when it is inconvenient to stand up. To be haunted by incongruent inaction or misaction can often feel like a Lady Macbeth fate that one does not wish on their worst enemy.
This month marks 6 years since the time of the COVID-19 lockdowns. 6 years have gone by and I think the face of uncertainty in the world has merely changed from a novel virus to a known human proclivity. Mutually-beneficial approaches and solutions can often feel immensely more difficult at best and impossible at worst.
As imperfect as we are and as inconsequential as we can feel at times, I still place my bets on the sentiment of playing your part. I have found glimpses of support, solidarity and compassion to have the most profound impact on the people around us (sometimes even in ways we take for granted).
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly."
South African Human Rights Day yesterday had me thinking of my contributions to a national dialogue at the headquarters of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, at the invitation of Brand South Africa. It was a day of powerful reflections on shared identity and it continues to be an honour and a deep sense of responsibility to serve diligently at such levels of the interconnected global community.
