Coming Up: 🚨April is Testicular Cancer Awareness Month 🚨

As we close off March, Sandton Oncology is preparing to spotlight an important health conversation in April, Testicular Cancer Awareness Month. 💙

Testicular cancer is one of the most treatable cancers, with survival rates exceeding 95% when detected early. That’s why awareness matters because early action can make all the difference.

Why this matters in South Africa
This cancer mainly affects young men between the ages of 15 and 44, often those who feel completely healthy. While it accounts for a smaller percentage of cancers locally (around 215 cases per year), it most commonly impacts men aged 20–39.

Despite differences in risk across population groups, one thing remains true for everyone: early detection saves lives.

What to start thinking about ahead of April:
✔️ Get familiar with monthly self-examinations
✔️ Understand what changes to look out for
✔️ Encourage the men in your life to prioritise their health

Throughout April, we’ll be sharing more information, guidance, and support to help you stay informed and proactive.

💙 Let’s get ready to have the conversation, raise awareness, and take action.

🌍 Colore**al Cancer in South Africa 🌍

Colore**al cancer affects many lives in South Africa, where it's one of the top 5 most common cancers, touching around 1,450 people each year based on recent data. For some, especially Black South Africans, it can appear earlier, sometimes before age 50 and certain areas like Mpumalanga and Limpopo see higher impacts, often due to later diagnoses.

✅Key Facts at a Glance
New diagnoses: 8-21 per 100,000 people (higher in some insured groups).

Trend: Rising steadily, with more family-linked cases (3-5 times global rates).

Whether you're in treatment, a survivor, or supporting someone, you're part of a strong community. At Sandton Oncology, our expert team delivers compassionate, tailored care, including advanced chemotherapy and radiation services for your unique journey.

✅Comprehensive Treatments at Sandton Oncology:

Happy Sunday, warriors.

As the light shifts this morning, take a breath and notice one thing your body is still doing right, maybe the steady rise of your chest, or fingers that grip a warm mug. That's your quiet rebellion against the chaos. This week, chase those micro-victories: a walk that stretches further, a conversation that lands deeper, or simply saying "not today" to what drains you. You've already outlasted storms most can't imagine, now build on that edge, one deliberate step at a time. You've got this.

Wishing you fire in your fight!

💙 March is also Colore**al Cancer Awareness Month

Colore**al cancer affects the colon or re**um and is the 3rd most common cancer worldwide, responsible for about 10% of all cancer cases. It is also the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally.

📈 The risk increases after age 50, but cases are rising among younger adults in some countries. Early stages often have few or no symptoms, which makes awareness and screening important.

*Possible warning signs include:*

🩸 blood in the stool
🥲 persistent abdominal pain or bloating
📉 unexplained weight loss
🥱 fatigue
💩 changes in bowel habits

*The good news? Many cases can be prevented or detected early.*

🥦 Eat more fruits and vegetables
🏃 Stay physically active
🚭 Avoid to***co
⚖️ Maintain a healthy weight
🍷 Limit alcohol

If symptoms appear, talk to a health professional early. Detecting colore**al cancer early greatly improves survival.

🌟 Kidney Cancer Awareness: Let’s Talk About It! 🌟
Kidney cancer may not be as widely spoken about as breast or cervical cancer, but it’s just as important to know the signs, risks, and steps we can take to protect our health. In South Africa, many people only discover kidney cancer at later stages because early symptoms can be subtle or even absent. That’s why awareness matters!

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing bite-sized, easy-to-read posts about:

What kidney cancer is and how it affects the body

Common symptoms to look out for

Risk factors relevant to South Africans, like high blood pressure and smoking

Treatment options available locally

💡 Knowledge is power. By learning together, we can encourage early detection, support loved ones, and strengthen our communities.

Stay tuned, share widely, and let’s make kidney cancer awareness part of our everyday health conversations. Together, we can shine a light on this often-overlooked cancer and inspire action for healthier futures. 🌱✨

💛 Gallbladder & Bile Duct Cancer-What Else You Should Know💛

These cancers are rare, but here are some important and interesting points:

Risk Factors: They’re more common in people with gallstones, chronic gallbladder inflammation, bile duct abnormalities, or certain infections. Age and gender also play a role. Gallbladder cancer is seen more often in women, while bile duct cancer is slightly more common in men.

Diagnosis Challenges: Because symptoms often appear late, doctors rely on imaging (like CT scans, MRIs, or ultrasounds) and sometimes endoscopic procedures to detect them. Blood tests can also help check liver function.

Treatment Advances: Surgery is the main treatment if the cancer is caught early. For advanced cases, chemotherapy, radiation, and newer targeted therapies are being used. Researchers are also exploring immunotherapy treatments that help the body’s own immune system fight cancer.

Awareness Month: February is recognized as Gallbladder and Bile Duct Cancer Awareness Month, which helps bring attention to these overlooked cancers and encourages education and advocacy.

Global Perspective: These cancers are more common in certain regions, like South America and Asia, due to higher rates of gallstones and infections. This shows how lifestyle, diet, and environment can influence risk.
