Ba Duan Jin # 5 - Wag the Tail to Calm the Heart
Traditional Chinese medicine studies the five internal organs and how they relate to the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water) ... placing great emphasis on the importance of these relationships for the human body to function well.
The purpose of this movement is to harmonize the Heart and Kidney organs by releasing excess heat. If the heat rises in the heart, this will lead to symptoms of insomnia, palpitations, heartburn, mania, and delirium, so the element water (kidney organ system) is stimulated to balance this through this exercise. The bladder complements the kidney qi and promotes renal water to rise. Water must always go down, but if too much goes down, it will cause the legs to become swollen and heavy. Therefore, kidneys and heart must be balanced for the body to be healthy. When the " heart fire " descends, it warms up the kidney. The main goal is to balance the kidney and the heart by stimulating the heart and kidney meridians and promoting better sleep, easing the mind.
