Obesity is fast becoming a global pandemic. According to the World Health Organisation, in 2014, 2.1 billion people were either overweight or obese. This accounts for approximately one third of the world’s population. And for the first time in the history of the human race, there are more overweight and obese people than underweight malnourished people in the world. In a recent Lancet report, about 38.3% of men and approximately 68.7% of women in South Africa were either overweight or obese. Obesity is no longer an adult problem. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 5 boys within the ages of 2-14 are overweight or obese. Extra weight comes with extra baggage in the form of increased risk for many health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, Cancer, High blood pressure, Stroke, Weak er****on, Infertility, Cataract, Pancreatitis, Gout, Osteoarthritis, Gall bladder disease, Cirrhosis of the Liver, Sleep apnoea, Hypoventilation syndrome, High cholesterol levels, Atherosclerosis and Heart diseases etc.
