The KeMoja Alternatives Event was a dynamic celebration of creativity, sports, and youth empowerment . A full showcase of what healthy, substance-free fun truly looks like. The day brought together a rich blend of activities that kept the energy high and the message clear: young people can thrive without drugs, alcohol, or risky behaviours.
One of the standout segments was the youth debate, tackling the topic:
“Friends influence other friends to try ho**ah more than advertising does.”
This conversation opened real reflections on peer pressure, social influence, and how everyday relationships shape behaviour. Our young debaters presented strong arguments that tied directly to KeMoja’s message of choosing positive circles and resisting unhealthy trends.
But the event was far bigger than the debate alone.
The grounds were buzzing with basketball games, showcasing skill, teamwork, and discipline. The courts came alive with young athletes proving that sports are a powerful, positive alternative that builds confidence and keeps the mind focused.
Right next to them, the 5-a-side soccer matches brought excitement, competition, and community spirit. These fast-paced games highlighted fitness, teamwork, and strategy all essential qualities that protect young people from negative influences.
Creativity also took centre stage.
We had dance performances, poetry showcases, music acts, and a special lineup of artistic expressions that reminded everyone that talent is one of the strongest antidotes to substance abuse. Each performer told a story through movement, rhythm, and words about identity, resilience, and choosing healthier paths.
The prizing and gifting ceremony honoured excellence across poetry, dance, and all alternatives categories. Every young person who stepped on stage or onto the field “showed up and showed off,” demonstrating that the best version of youth is found in creativity.Gauteng Department of Social Development
