Kidney disease is a non-communicable disease (NCD) and currently affects around 850 million people worldwide.
One in ten adults has chronic kidney disease (CKD). The global burden of CKD is increasing, and is projected to become the 5th most common cause of years of life lost globally by 2040. CKD is a major cause of catastrophic health expenditure.

The costs of dialysis and transplantation consume 2–3% of the annual healthcare budget in high-income countries. Crucially, kidney disease can be prevented and progression to end-stage kidney disease can be delayed with appropriate access to basic diagnostics and early treatment.

This year World Kidney Day continues to raise awareness of the increasing burden of kidney diseases worldwide and to strive for kidney health for everyone, everywhere. Specifically, the 2020 campaign highlights the importance of preventive interventions to avert the onset and progression of kidney disease.

Some people with diabetes may wish they could be less aware of their diabetes. However, in a busy world, diabetes awareness is key.

If we want the medical establishment and national government to put their shoulders behind finding a cure, then we need to raise our voices, raise our profile and raise awareness of this annoying and often unpleasant condition.

MEDICAL BREAKTHROUGHS

Insulin was discovered not quite 100 years ago, but since then there have been no major breakthroughs in the treatment of Type 1 diabetes, and the numbers diagnosed quietly grow.

Meanwhile diagnoses of type 2 is the ‘headline grabber’ with dramatics statements made that the NHS can’t afford to treat people who are seen to actually just have a weight problem.

WHY RAISE AWARENESS

If they have Type 2 diabetes, chances are that it’s more or less impossible to lose weight. The medications alone help you gain or at least maintain weight.

So there’s a lot of misunderstanding out there. It’s only by raising awareness that we can help everyone else to understand what we live with.

DIABETES AWARENESS

For some people diabetes awareness may be about the prevention of the onset of the condition. Healthy eating and more active lifestyles can ward off type 2 diabetes induced by being overweight. Learn to love food in a way that does not compromise your health, or your taste buds!

SHARING KNOWLEDGE

For other people talking and sharing knowledge will bring them support and let them lose any sense of being different — it’s a tough call, but life with diabetes doesn’t have to be all that bad. Let’s share what we know.

TALKING ABOUT DIABETES

By talking about diabetes and the effect is has on our lives, we help keep healthcare admistrators and politicians focused on the job of providing us with the care and information we need to successfully live with our diagnosis.

Today is Clinical Trials Day 2025 — a day for recognising the importance of clinical research in protecting and improving global health.

Clinical trials in South Africa are important. They provide us with data about how disease treatments work outside of the laboratory and in real life. Clinical trials also provide data about how well a drug works in the South African population, which can be very different from other countries around the world.

Soweto Clinical Trials Centre have been on the forefront as one the leading Trial Centres in doing Covid-19 Vaccine Trials in South Africa as well as various other trials for over 2 decades.

A special thank you to all doing Clinical Trials and to the Staff of Soweto Clinical Trials Centre and the participant's, without you it would not be possible. 🙌🙌🙌🙌

Lupus affects people of all nationalities, races, ethnicity, gender and age. Lupus can affect any part of the body in any way at any time, often with unpredictable and life-changing results. While lupus knows no boundaries, knowing all you can about lupus can help control its impact.

Lupus is a long-term autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy tissue. Symptoms include inflammation, swelling, and damage to the joints, skin, kidneys, blood, heart, and lungs.
Due to its complex nature, people sometimes call lupus the "disease of 1,000 faces."

As we commemorate World TB Day today, Gift of the Givers is proud to highlight the incredible work of our medical team members, Drs. As'ad and Qasim Bhorat, who are at the forefront of groundbreaking tuberculosis vaccine research.

These two brothers are key research investigators in the Phase 3 clinical trial for the M72/AS01E TB vaccine candidate, an initiative led by the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute involving 20 000 participants across 7 countries (South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Kenya, Indonesia, and Vietnam). If successful, this would be the first new TB vaccine in over 100 years, offering hope to millions, particularly in South Africa, where TB remains a major public health challenge.
Their dedication to both medical research and humanitarian service exemplifies the mission of Gift of the Givers to restore hope and dignity by providing lifesaving healthcare services, humanitarian aid, disaster relief efforts and community upliftment across South Africa and beyond our borders.

Cancer is more than just a medical diagnosis — it’s a deeply personal matter.

Behind every diagnosis lies a unique human story - stories of grief, pain, healing, resilience, love and more. That’s why a people-centred approach to cancer care that fully integrates each individual’s unique needs, with compassion and empathy, leads to the best health outcomes.
