Happy Global Move for Health Day!

A day created by the WHO to promote and celebrate physical activity 🤸🏻‍♀️ physical activity can be achieved through things such as:

🚶🏽‍♀️ Walking
🏃‍♂️ Running
🥾 Hiking
💃🏻 Dancing
🏊 Swimming
👩‍🌾 Gardening

Physical activity should be practised at least 150-300min/week at a moderate intensity. Physical activity has major health benefits such as reducing the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke, improving bone health and function, muscular and cardio respiratory fitness 🫀

Celebrate what your body can do by moving it in some way today! 🥳

Scoliosis is a condition effecting the spine. It is identified by a lateral (sideways) curvature of the spine 🩻

Scoliosis as a whole can either be:
1. Functional
2. Structural

Functional scoliosis is due to external factors that act on the spine. This would be things such muscle imbalances or leg length discrepancies causing the spine to be misaligned 💪

Structural scoliosis is due to an abnormality within the spine itself. This would be the vertebrae being curved and rotated 🧬

Swipe to see the main areas in the spine where you may find lateral curvature 👉

Taking into account the severity of the curvature, both functional and structural scoliosis can be treated using techniques to strengthen inactive muscle and release tight muscles in spasm. This can help to improve posture, breathing capacity and overall well-being 🤸🏻‍♀️

Let’s chat about the ankle and foot. Perhaps without you realizing, they do a lot of work for us every day and do need some tlc to make sure everything is functioning properly 🦶

As you can see, the ankle and foot consist of an intricate bony structure. A number of muscles, ligaments and tendons all have to work together to provide stability, support, balance and mobility.

When there are imbalances within the ankle or foot, it can compromise the rest of your body. Remember, everything is connected 🌀

In the few days to come we’ll dive into common structures that get injured and take a look at which muscles get effected as a result. We’ll also look at different phases of rehab and exercises to create a more stable joint! 👣

Hands up of you know what mobility is? 🙋

For those of you unsure, mobility is the degree to which a joint can move before being restricted by surrounding tissues (such as ligaments/tendons/muscles).

Simply put, it’s the range of motion that you have at a particular joint 🙆🏻‍♀️.

It’s important to have good range of motion as it’ll helps:

🙆🏻‍♀️ Improve posture

🙆🏻‍♀️ Improve movement

🙆🏻‍♀️ Improve load bearing

🙆🏻‍♀️ Reduce injury risk

🙆🏻‍♀️ Reduce compensations

These are all achieved by helping you open up the joint that may be restricted.

Having more mobility allows you to get into the correct position to perform the exercise/task. It further allows you to be in the optimal position for correct muscle recruitment. This overall puts you in the best position for optimal movement patterning and efficient movement 🕺🏽

Another incredible year working at the Otter African Trail Run 🦦🪨 🏃‍♂️.

It was great to work at the munchie point to ensure that all of the runners were fueled and hydrated for the rest of the race 💥 and to support my runners as they came past 😎.

Such a privilege to have a great team by my side and to be surrounded by top quality athletes! 🤩

Can’t wait until next year 🐾

📚 The Trendelenburg sign 📚

This term is used to describe a lateral (to the side) drop in your pelvis when you’re standing on one leg 🦵🏽.

The primary muscle that should keep your pelvis level in this position is the gluteus medius 🤓.

When your pelvis drops laterally, it has an effect up and down the kinetic chain. It can cause knee to fall inward and your trunk to crunch up sideways. Both of these positions do not allow for optimal force distribution and can lead to musculoskeletal injuries 💥🫣.

There are many exercises that you can do to strengthen your gluteus medius but strengthening it in optimal alignment is key! 🌟

Next time you’re load baring on one leg, check in to make sure your pelvis isn’t dropping🕵️‍♀️.

Stretching is something that most of us don’t get around to or think we don’t have time for 🫣 even though there are some great benefits of including it in your routine 🦸‍♀️

❓Stress relief: we hold stress in our muscles. Stretching can help loosen our muscles that we grip into in response to stress.

❓Improve posture: poor flexibility can lead to imbalances in the body and improper alignment. Stretching can help level out these imbalances and allow for optimal posture to be obtained.

❓Blood circulation: blood is pumped to the muscle that is being stretched. This brings in more oxygen and nutrients and in turn helps remove built up waste products.

❓Muscle flexibility: allows you to move more comfortably and get into the ideal position to perform everyday tasks.

❓Improved physical performance: helps you get into a better position to perform a specific movement.
