100 Park Runs…. with some help from an Unloader Knee Brace

My father-in-law, Claude Claassen, has osteoarthritis (OA) of his right knee. He is a very active man and we decided a few years ago to treat him conservatively. Conservative treatment of early knee OA is a multi-faceted approach which may include weight loss, use of anti-inflammatory medication, Omega-3 supplements and injections into the joint of Hyaluronic Acid (known as Viscosupplementation). In some specific cases an Unloader Knee Brace is also of huge benefit. Claude has found that it makes a huge difference especially when he wants to do the weekly Park Run in Port Elizabeth. Last weekend he and his wife Magda completed their 100th Park Run. It is testament to a wonderful life of shared memories that they reached this epic milestone together!

Knees and Day Zero
Nope....Knees do not dry out and dessicate in the dry Cape weather. However, I found it intriguing to note how our behaviour patterns as a direct result of the water shortage are influencing the health of our knees. Let me elaborate.... two patients recently consulted me after falling from their water tanks having both injured knee ligaments. Another injured his knee moving a box full of water bottles with his foot. Yet another, having recently had a double knee replacement, asked me when it would be safe to pick up a 25l water drum! So as you can see.... even knees are susceptible to the looming threat of Day Zero!

Roberto da Silva is progressing well with his final phase of rehabilitation after ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and ALL (anterolateral ligament) reconstructions of his right knee 9 months ago. Take note of the sport-specific part of the drill he is doing at the end of this video. The beautiful game will soon see Roberto again....and at the rate he is going, it will be with a bang! Thanks for sharing this with us Roberto!

Unloader knee brace in action
My father-in-law, Claude Claassen, has early medial knee osteoarthritis. He has had significant improvement in function since we fitted an “unloader knee brace” for him. Here he is partaking in the Park Run on the Port Elizabeth beachfront last Saturday. You will see the brace on his right knee, unloading the worn-out inner side of the knee. You will surely also notice his beautiful wife and my mother -in-law, Magda. Like my wife Chardri, she too often manages to catch the limelight and make their husbands look good!
There are many non-operative interventions that can make a huge difference to your early knee osteoarthritis. One of them is this so-called “unloader knee brace”. The principle is that the brace applies a force on the knee that unloads the affected side. It is an expensive item so the company offers my patients a one-week trial. A brace is fitted for you by the orthotist and you wear it for a week when you are up and about, especially when exercising (walking, golf, bowls, hiking, tennis etc). After the week you decide if the relief is worth the price tag.
