Tylah, one of our therapists, is showing you two simple tests to help build neck strength this Movember. 🧔💪
Strong neck muscles mean your moustache doesn’t have to do all the heavy lifting! 😉
🔹 Cervical Extension Test
Lie on your stomach with your head over the edge, tuck your chin, lift your head in line with your body, and hold. Great for strengthening the muscles at the back of your neck that support posture and reduce strain.
🔹 Cervical Flexion Endurance Test
Lie on your back, tuck your chin, lift your head slightly, and hold while keeping the chin tucked. This builds the deep neck flexors needed for stability, control, and reduced pain.
Training your neck = training your nervous system. 🧠✨
👁️ Test (and train) your gaze stability with this quick drill.
Common symptoms of reduced gaze stability are headaches, nausea, fogginess and dizziness. These symptoms can present with whiplash, concussion and chronic neck pain.
Try for 30 seconds and see how you feel.
If symptoms like headache, nausea, dizziness, fogginess worsen, speak with a rehab professional.
You may need to retrain your vestibular oculomotor system as part of your rehabilitation program.

Do you suffer from chronic neck pain or headaches? Perhaps you have had a previous concussion or whiplash?
Ever noticed that massage, manual therapy and stretching help for the short term but your pain and headache always comes back.
Muscle tightness may just be a symptom and not the cause of your neck pain/persistent headaches.
Have you ever been tested for the following in relation to your neck pain/headaches:
💚Eye and head coordination
💚Neck on trunk coordination
💚Balance
💚Joint position error testing (Proprioception)
💚Motor control in various directions
We will be sharing some tests and exercises in the upcoming weeks to give insight into the holistic assessment and treatment of the neck.

This November we are going to be talking about the neck. Our neck helps us interact with our environment and exist in the world. It’s not just for turning our head but helps with balance, focusing your eyes and coordinating movement.
👉 Stay tuned for more information for the month of November

“65 Roses” is an easier way for children to say Cystic Fibrosis, a rare genetic disease that affects the lungs and other organs in both children and adults.
Earlier this month, our Occupational Therapist Jane Venter had the privilege of raising awareness about Cystic Fibrosis by representing alongside Lizeli Olivier at the HASA 2025 Conference ().
We’re so proud to see our team contributing to advocacy and education for such an important cause, every conversation helps spread awareness and support those affected. 💙

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness this October, Jane Venter (Occupational Therapist and Certified Lymph Therapist) and I had the privilege of assisting with breast cancer awareness talks hosted by Health Promoters International in Khayamandi on the 11th and 18th of October.
It was a meaningful opportunity to share knowledge, raise awareness, and empower women to take charge of their breast health. 💗

The Brain Connection! Planning, Organising & Getting Things Done
Sensory regulation plays a big role in executive functioning, your brain’s ability to plan, organise, and complete tasks.
When sensory input feels “off,” it’s harder to focus, make decisions, or even start a task.
🧠 When you support your sensory needs, you set yourself up to stay focused, efficient, and consistent. Whether you’re studying, working, or creating.

How Sensory Regulation Impacts Focus, Emotions & Energy
Sensory regulation influences more than focus, it affects mood and energy too.
💚Too much noise, light, or movement can lead to sensory overload, causing anxiety or burnout.
💙Too little stimulation can make it hard to stay alert or motivated.
💡 Finding balance helps maintain emotional stability, conserve energy, and stay productive throughout the day.
Ever notice how some environments help you focus, while others completely throw you off?
That’s sensory regulation at work, how we manage our responses to what we see, hear, feel, smell, or sense internally.
When our sensory systems are well-regulated, we filter distractions, stay focused, and feel calm. When they’re not, productivity and emotional balance can take a hit.
🌿 Understanding your sensory needs is the first step to working (and feeling) better.

Therapy in Action opened its doors in 2010 in Stellenbosch at Weidenhof Street. The partners at that stage recognized the need for a multidisciplinary team approach combining the expertise of both Physio & Occupational therapy. We saw the benefit of combining our services to obtain the best results for our clients, whilst facilitating earlier return to work.
We initially honed our services in hand and work-related injuries which inadvertently led to the establishment of a therapeutic gym area comprising of a word hardening floor area, cardiovascular equipment and simulated work activities. By providing different services at the same practice we were able to improve communication, goal planning & rehabilitation outcomes. This in turn further assisted our patients by lessoning their travel time and expenses.
In June 2013 we expanded our services to Somerset West, 3A Arun Place, also making our services available to the Helderberg and Overberg districts. Our rehabilitation statistics continued to reflect promising recovery and earlier to work time frames and we were now able to filter it through to these areas.
We were fortunate to welcome a Dietitian & Psychologist to our team in association to our services. This naturally meant that we could offer a wider service provision to our clients. We also started focusing on treating more private patients especially in the area of sport injuries and chronic pain conditions. Our service provision to insurance providers and corporate clients expended and we increased our assessment expertise in work related conditions and -illnesses involving psychosocial and cognitive sequlae as well.
In 2017 we moved to larger premises at 4 Herold Street Stellenbosch. This led to Elbert de Wit (Psychologist), and Imke Oosthuizen (Speech Therapist) joining our team as Associates. The location of this practice is perfect due to plenty of space, free secure parking and walking distance from local amenities in Dorp Street. We quickly felt at home.
In Somerset West we also required more space due to our growing service provision which led to our gym area being upgraded and one more consulting rooms being added. The beginning of 2018 offered new challenges and ideas. Our team continued growing to a current total of 6 Physiotherapists, 7 Occupational therapists, 1 Practice Manager, 3 Administrators. In Association we proudly boast 2 Clinical Psychologists, a Dietitian, Speech Therapist, Wound care Sister and Orthotist and a part time Orthopaedic Hand Surgeon.
As the year approaches the halfway mark we continue to focus on the quality of our service provision whilst expanding our service provision in the surrounding regions. For further information on our services and staff members please visit our website on www.therapyinaction.co.za.
