The most important nutrients for people with osteoporosis are calcium and vitamin D.

Calcium is a key building block for your bones.

Vitamin D helps your body to absorb calcium – For vitamin D, look for items that are fortified, such as some orange juices, breakfast cereals, and plant-based milks. Certain fish, such as salmon, tuna and sardines, may also be a good source.

The amount needed depends on factors such as age and gender.

About 85 to 90% of adult bone mass is acquired by age 18 in girls and 20 in boys, so building strong bones during childhood and adolescence can help prevent osteoporosis later in life.

Include calcium-rich foods such as milk, cheese and other dairy foods in your children’s diets along with green leafy vegetables, such as broccoli, cabbage and okra.

Adults should also eat/drink enough calcium to prevent bone loss.

Meet Liezl Compion

I graduated with a BSc Dietetics degree from the University of Stellenbosch in 2000.

Thereafter, I started my career in the UK where I worked in the public and private sector for three years, mainly specialising in nutrition in ICU, diabetes, and paediatrics.

Upon returning to South Africa, I worked as a private practising dietitian at Vergelegen Mediclinic as well as a practice in Somerset West. Then, I joined a private practice in Stellenbosch for five years.
