✨Repetitive Strain Injury✨
This has been an extremely common condition I’ve been seeing during lockdown with so many people working from home.
The diagnosis literally speaks for itself 🤷🏻♀️
This is an injury that occurs from repetitive motion and can also be known an overuse injury, mostly related to the upper limb (I.e. forearm, hand, wrist etc)
As the name clearly tells us, this condition doesn’t occur instantly.. it’s a ✨gradual build up of damage ✨ to not only your muscles but to your tendons, nerves and joints as well.
Now most cases can be minor however those can turn into a nasty chronic injuries if not addressed ✨as soon as possible✨
Now before you panic there are some early signs you can catch before it gets there:
➡️ tingling / pins and needles
➡️ swelling
➡️ sharp shooting pain
➡️ weakness
➡️ losing grip / dropping objects
➡️ pain / tenderness
✨ What should you do if you suspect an RSI? ✨
➡️ stop the activity that’s causing you pain immediately
➡️ ice - this will help with the pain and swelling
➡️ call your physio 📲👩🏻⚕️✨😎
✨How can a physio help?✨
Because RSI targets various structures there is no recipe or quick fix ❌ treatments will vary based on structure involved ❌
➡️ your physio will assess your pain, the joint as well as the muscle groups involved.
➡️ once we’ve identified what’s causing your pain we will use various modalities to treat / manage the pain
➡️ we will aim to improve muscle strength and range
➡️ advise on correct postural techniques / advise on safe alternative actions that aren’t as harmful
➡️ because RSI is an occurring injury we will include regular follow ups to manage the condition
Most common victims ... those sitting at their desks 👀
I know you’ve heard this many times but pleeeease ✨take breaks often✨you’ll be doing your body a kindness!
Also ❌stress ❌ has been known to exacerbate this condition 🥴
but that’s a post for another time 👀
