Join Louise as she explores the history of Occupational Therapy groups in South Africa, celebrating 80 years of OTASA and reflecting on how our collective journey continues to shape the future of OT. Are we all speaking the same language in OT?

In occupational therapy, group-based interventions are described in many different ways - group work, group activities, group therapy, evocative groups, task-centred, creative, psycho-social, socio-emotional... the list goes on. This mix of terminology can make it hard to have consistent conversations across hospitals, training institutions, and clinical teams.

At OTGrow, we’re encouraging OTs to think about how we name and describe our work and how standardising terminology can help us:

- Communicate more clearly.
- Train students more effectively.
- Strengthen our professional identity.
- Improve collaboration and outcomes.

What terms do YOU use in your practice? Let us know in the comments!

Should Occupational Therapists Be Presenting Psychoeducational Groups?

Should OTs still be running psychoeducational (didactic) groups or is it time to move toward more activity-based, occupation-centred group work? In this episode, Louise explores a thought-provoking question raised in OTGrow’s “Conversations Around the History of Occupational Therapy Groups in South Africa” series. She shares insights from leading professionals including Rosemary Crouch, Lisa Wagner, Pat De Wit, Debbie Smuts, Jelima Sangu, and Heidi Morgan and invites you to reflect on the role and unique value OTs bring to group facilitation within multidisciplinary teams.

In this video, you’ll learn:

- What defines a psychoeducational group (and how it differs from activity-based sessions).
- Why some OTs are moving away from purely educational group formats.
- How to reflect on your own facilitation style and scope of practice.
- The evolving role of information and accessibility in today’s therapeutic world.

Join the conversation: Do you still present psychoeducation groups, or do you believe OT groups should remain occupation-focused? Share your thoughts in the comments.
