We’re wired for connection, and group therapy is where that wiring finds purpose. At OTGrow, we believe that healing happens in community. Occupational therapists who facilitate group work know the power of shared stories, mutual support, and collective resilience.

Ubuntu in Group Facilitation (Part 4). How do we facilitate Ubuntu in a therapy group without controlling, rescuing, or “performing” as the leader? In this episode, Louise and Michael unpack what it actually looks like to lead Ubuntu in the room:

- Facilitator as a “sheepdog” (guiding, not controlling)
- Why we must sometimes facilitate conflict (not avoid it)
- The golden thread of Ubuntu: “I am because we are” and how it builds cohesion + dignity
- Ending with dignity including the powerful 30-second rule

Question for you: What’s hardest for you as a group facilitator right now: cohesion, conflict, structure, or endings?

Group therapy is Ubuntu in action; healing through shared stories, mutual support, and collective strength.

As OTGrow steps into 2026, we celebrate Ubuntu: I am because we are. For occupational group therapists, this theme is more than a philosophy, it is it’s a framework for facilitating cohesive groups that build resilient communities.

Together, we can create spaces of courage, connection, and transformation.

OTGrow Theme for 2026: Ubuntu - “I am because we are.” Our guiding phrase for the year: The individual grows as the group gathers.

In 2026, we’re embracing Ubuntu as more than a theme, it’s a way of living and working together. Ubuntu reminds us that our growth is intertwined: when communities gather, individuals flourish; when individuals thrive, communities are strengthened.

This year, we’ll dive deeper into how group processes, shared experiences, and collective support can unlock the best in each of us. Whether through group therapy, teamwork, or community building, Ubuntu teaches us that connection is the foundation of resilience and transformation. We’d love to hear from you: how has community helped you grow? Share your story below and let’s celebrate the power of “we.”

We’re restructuring our workshops to make them easier to navigate and even more impactful. Not all courses will run every year, so be sure to diarise and book the ones that resonate with your journey.

This shift is all about sharpening skills, refining craft, and ensuring that OTs trained through OTGrow are recognised as excellent group therapists whose expertise is sought after. Keep your eye on our socials for further announcements and plan ahead to secure your spot!

In the meantime, check out our 2026 calendar on our website: https://otgrow.co.za/.

In today’s video, Louise reflects on what 2025 taught us as group facilitators: the wins and highlights, the disappointments, and the biggest lessons learned plus what OTGrow is looking forward to in 2026.

We also take a moment with deep gratitude to thank the incredible facilitators and co-facilitators who helped make this year’s training, workshops, and support spaces possible.

In this episode, we cover:

- 2025 highlights & wins (including workshops beyond our usual areas and growing international collaboration)
- The 80th anniversary OTASA conversations and why our collective OT “group history” matters
- Katekani’s journey (and why you can learn so much from her growth process)
- The Step-Out Programme: dreaming, clarity, accountability, marketing, pricing, and overcoming self-sabotage
- 2025 lows (cancelled workshops/programmes) and what that taught us about trusting the process
- Looking ahead to 2026 + how to get the training calendar
