How do we use crafts in group therapy in a way that is actually therapeutic? In this week’s OTGrow YouTube video, Louise opens a brand-new series on crafts in groups by exploring an important question: Where is the therapy actually happening?

Using crafts in groups can be meaningful and powerful but only if there is clear therapeutic intention, intervention, and group process.

In Part 1: Introduction, we begin unpacking:

- What makes a craft activity therapeutic?
- Why “doing a craft” is not enough on its own
- Where the group intervention comes in
- And what we are really hoping to achieve when we use crafts in practice

This is the first video in a 6-part series, and it is going to be such a valuable one for anyone facilitating groups.

We’d love to hear from you:

What happens when learning goes beyond theory and into lived experience?

Devindree Pillay recently co facilitated a 3 day experiential group therapy training alongside Louise for mental health OTs working within a UK trust. In this video, she reflects on the depth of engagement, the openness in the room, and what unfolds when therapists are invited to fully step into group processes, not just observe them. This kind of learning stays with you. It shifts how you facilitate, how you respond, and how you hold space in your own groups. If you’d like to gain from OTGrow training to strengthen your practice and develop your confidence in group work, visit our website and choose a course that resonates with where you are right now in your group facilitation journey. https://otgrow.co.za/training/

In group therapy, safety is often misunderstood.

It’s not the absence of challenge, discomfort, or difference. It’s the presence of connection. As occupational therapists, our role in group work is to intentionally design connection, through structuring, facilitating interaction and participation in carefully selected activities/tasks.

When connection is present:
- Participation increases.
- Group members try new responses and experience deepens learning.
- Groups move forward together.

A reminder for every OT facilitating groups and for anyone working with people.

Pause and reflect: how does connection show up in your groups? Visit OTGrow for group ready strategies you can use immediately. https://otgrow.co.za/

Advancing Social Cohesion in Groups

A living learning process, not a once off intervention. We’ve opened a limited number of additional places in OTGrow’s Advancing Social Cohesion in Groups Course for professionals who want to work with complexity where it actually lives - in people, systems, and organisations.

This course is different because it’s alive.

What you explore in each lecture doesn’t stay theoretical. You take it straight back into your workplace, notice how it lands, work with it in real time, and then return to the next session with lived experience, real questions and deeper insight.
- Entry requirement: NQF Level 8.
- Open to professionals across education, commerce, healthcare, NGOs, community and systems work.

This is learning shaped by where you are and what you are navigating. Registration closes on 15 April. Places are limited and offered on a first come basis. If you’re ready to move beyond theory and engage social cohesion as a practice, not just a concept. this may be your moment.

What if stronger teams start with deeper connection? A conversation between Louise and Dr Frederick Marais from the Centre for Social Innovation at Hugenote Kollege explores the thinking behind the Advancing Social Cohesion in Groups course.

They unpack:
- Why social cohesion matters in teams.
- How relationships influence the way we work together.
- What becomes possible when people genuinely learn from each other.

When we work together with intention, collaboration shifts and so do the results. This course focuses on developing leadership skills that support cohesion, trust, and more effective team dynamics. You may be surprised by what becomes possible when people start listening to each other differently. If this is relevant to your work or team, take a few minutes to watch the conversation and see what stands out for you.

We’ve made a few additional seats available on the course. Register here: https://hugenote.com/apply.php by/before 15 April.

Some days call us back to the basics: connection, compassion, reflection, and courage. In the therapy room and in our own lives, the real breakthroughs often come from the small, intentional choices we make: to reconnect, to repair, to soften, to listen, and to grow.

As OTs, we hold space for healing every day. But remember this too: your own growth matters. Your presence matters. Your voice matters. Here’s your reminder that the work you do in groups, with families, and in community is deeply human and profoundly impactful. Let’s keep choosing connection. Let’s keep choosing growth. Let’s keep choosing the kind of practice that makes us better clinicians and better people.

Grow your skills. Grow yourself. OTGrow is here for your journey. Take the next step in your group therapy journey, grow with us.

Does the Interactive Group Model actually work?

In this episode, we explore the findings from a research project conducted in Touws River through the MoreThanMeerAs community programme. The programme combined the Interactive Group Model (IGM) with a creative community process to support healing, connection, and social cohesion.

The results were powerful.

Participants described how authentic connection within the group helped them feel worthy of healing and belonging, often for the first time. Many shared deeply personal experiences in a space where they felt safe, seen, and heard.

Even more remarkable?
Some participants reported that the changes they experienced in the group were still present nine months later. This episode explores why healing through relationships remains one of the most powerful forces in group work.

If you facilitate groups, work in community health, or are interested in the science of relational healing, this conversation is worth watching.

Your work is unique your training should be too.

At OTGrow, we honour the depth and breadth of occupational therapy by offering training that is designed specifically for OTs. No generic workshops. No one size fits all learning. Just relevant, meaningful, scope aligned training that speaks directly to the heart of our profession. Our programmes strengthen the skills that matter in real clinical spaces, grounded in OT philosophy, shaped by local context, and backed by years of clinical practice based insight. If you’ve ever wanted training that gets what OTs actually do… this is it. Because when our profession grows, our impact multiplies.

This is Commitment 5 of our 7 core OTGrow commitments.

Make sure you’re collecting them all as we continue sharing each one.
