With bipolar, sometimes reality can feel thin when cognitive distortions take over. That’s why coping ahead matters. Have a plan for yourself. Have a plan with the people who support you. Don’t feed the symptoms, ground through the senses. When the mind drifts, the body can bring you back, preparation is a form of survival.

To the people who love someone with bipolar: Thank you for seeing the human behind the symptoms, for staying when things are messy. The illness is real — but it is not the whole person. The diagnosis is not the identity.

Unconditional love doesn’t erase the struggle on both sides, but it makes the road survivable. We can lose so much when we are highly symptomatic, we appreciate those who stay and see us through the consequences of this complicated life altering condition.

I wear ‘head gear’ to contain myself, it helps keep my my racing mind in check somehow and you will actually seldom see me without a hat or headband. Do you have a quirk / trick like this you use to feel more in control of your thoughts? Comment and let me know ⬇️

This is the side of bipolar most people don’t see. The breaking. The crying. The weight in the chest. I document it — videos, photos, journals —for perspective. Because when I’m in it, it feels permanent. But it’s not. Bipolar moves in cycles. I see phots and videos of me happy and stable. The lows pass. I look back at what I’ve documented to remind myself: you have been in a bad way, but also, I have been okay before. I will be okay again.

There’s something scientifically interesting here too. Memory is state-dependent. When you’re depressed, your brain selectively recalls other depressed states. It filters for evidence that confirms the mood. By documenting the lows and later reviewing them from a stable place, that’s not just emotional coping, it’s cognitive strategy.

“I hate being bipolar. It’s awesome.” That’s what my shirt says. If you live with bipolar, you get the joke. Mania can feel electric. Fast. Creative. Magnetic. It can look like confidence. Hustle. Vision. In reality it is often impulsive and risky in all the wrong ways. Sometimes we get it right though - sometimes my grand ideas work out - gift and a curse. Mental health’s biggest ‘frenemy’ - a fried that is an enemy. That empty space where momentum and purpose are lacking and a small way to combat it.

I live with bipolar. I’m asking this community five questions. I’ll share my answers in the video — I’d love to hear yours in the comments:
1. When were you diagnosed?
2. Did getting a diagnosis help?
3. What did your early symptoms look like before anyone called it bipolar?
4. What’s your biggest early warning sign that a mood shift is coming?
5. What has helped you more than people would expect?
Your experience could help someone recognize their own patterns sooner. Share if you’re comfortable. WATCH: https://youtu.be/Ng9gSfB2jpU

Bipolar and Borderline are not the same thing. They can look similar — intense emotions, impulsivity, relationship instability. But the mechanics are different. Bipolar is a mood disorder. Borderline is a personality and attachment disorder. You can have both at the same time. An accurate diagnosis changes treatment outcomes. The wrong label delays the right support. Jodi, from Alabama, wrote a poem about living with bipolar. She also shared words from one of her darkest moments — including a line that stopped me cold: that she felt she might be better off as a memory than a person.

Thank you, Jodi, for trusting this community with something so intimate. Breaking the silence like this isn’t easy. It’s brave. And it matters. WATCH:
