Today the Somali Community in Uitenhage led by its Chairperson Mr. Abdul Omar held a meeting with Uitenhage Provincial Hospital Board.The meeting was chaired by Mr Tim Mcquire, who hold a portfolio of Treasurer and Sub-Committee Chairperson for Infrastructure.In the Meeting another board member Ms Charlotte Bouwer who hold Chairperson :Patient Care & Quality Assurance attended. Organised Labour was also represented in the meeting.

The Somali Community representatives expressed appreciation for the warm welcome by the Board. They have requested to partner up with the hospital on service improvement and mentioned that they are aware of the challenges faced by the the public sector.

Challenges of patient care with specific reference to the Somali community is in the main the language barrier and more so cultural barriers. The concerns were acknowledged,and protocol when dissatisfied with service was explained to them. Staff shortages and infrastructure challenges were also raised .The board stated that it plans to turnaround the current status through engagement with the Department of Health, Community-Based Organizations and the private sector. The formation of this partnership is meant to benefit all within the catchment area of the hospital.It is also to equip the clients (patients & visitors) on the hospital policies.

Mrs. Bouah will compile a comprehensive report for the hospital management with proposals as per the discussions of the meeting. It is thus envisioned that out of this noble gesture, the Somali community will comply with the hospital policies/ prescripts of the department of health.

Today the Hospital Board 's Sub-committe on Infrastructure, Risk & Safety welcomed NPO,named MES at Uitenhage Provincial Hospital (UPH). Meeting was chaired by Mr. Macquire. Ms. Nadine Du Pisanie, from MES briefed the committee on the work her organization does in the community and they have adopted the UPH for placement of homeless and destitute, currently on a rehabilitation program with their organization. These individuals will provide grounds cleaning services every Monday and Tuesday until July 2026.

The committee welcomed the wonderful gesture by MES and appreciated the formation of the strategic partnership. Services provided to the facility will be sweeping of the grounds, weeding, hedge trimming and tree felling. This is an important project in that it will assist with making certain areas of the hospital safe and risk free for patients and staff.

In attendance were:
- 2 hospital board members
- Ms. Du Pisanie from MES
- Mr. Sineli for Security Coordination
- Mr. Klaas for Maintenance Division
- Ms. Liebenberg for HOSPERSA
- Mrs. Qawu for Denosa
Agreement:
- There will be 10 cleaners
- Working from 8am - 4pm
- They will have name tags
- list of their names will be forwarded to the security coordinator
- Cleaners receive stipends through private funding
- Tools will be kept at maintenance after end of shifts.

This is an empowerment project is very well received by the hospital.It boosts the Tidy UPH Initiative.
