Fatigue is often attributed to stress, lack of sleep or a busy season of life.

But for many women — particularly those experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding — low iron levels may be part of the picture.

Iron plays an essential role in oxygen transport and energy production. When iron stores are low, ongoing exhaustion, poor concentration and reduced stamina can follow.

During Endometriosis Awareness Month, it’s important to recognise how conditions associated with heavy bleeding may also affect iron levels and overall wellbeing.

Before starting supplementation, appropriate assessment is important. Not all iron formulations are the same, and correct dosing and absorption matter.

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside it. For many women, it brings intense period pain, heavy bleeding, pelvic discomfort and ongoing fatigue that can affect work, school and daily life.

It is often dismissed or misunderstood, which is why diagnosis can take years.

Heavy menstrual bleeding may also lead to low iron levels, which can worsen exhaustion and make recovery feel even harder.
