Debunking common myths around breastfeeding during emergencies with SidebySide

😟When mom and baby are faced with stressful events in life, these situations can often impact the mother's ability to breastfeed, as well as the support she receives from the rest of the family.

📃That is why it is important to debunk some common myths around breastfeeding in emergencies.

🗨️The first common myth is: STRESS MAKES THE MILK DRY UP.

💬FACT: Stress does NOT dry up breast milk. With some mommies, acute stress temporarily reduces breast milk production.

🤱🏾However, mother and baby must have skin-to-skin contact to increase breast milk production.

🤱🏾Breastfeeding calms the mother and baby due to the hormones it releases

🟥Some babies are born with birth defects, health conditions that happen while the baby is developing. We can’t prevent all birth defects, and most importantly, they are nobody’s fault.

🟥Most birth defects happen very early in pregnancy, often before you even know you’re pregnant. Nothing you did or didn’t do causes most birth defects.

🟥Regular antenatal visits, newborn check‑ups, and early childhood screening can help identify conditions early so babies get the care they need to thrive.

🟥Taking folic acid, avoiding alcohol and smoking, managing infections, and eating well can reduce some risks, but they cannot prevent all birth defects.

👶🏻Every child can learn, grow, and flourish with love, support, and access to care.

🧑🏼‍🍼Today, we honour all parents and caregivers raising children with special health needs.

It’s in the best interest of every child for parents and guardians to sign and return Integrated School Health Programme consent forms. This allows school health teams to provide these vital services and support your child’s growth, development, and academic success.

Undetected health issues can affect a child’s ability to learn, concentrate, and thrive in the classroom. Early detection helps remove these barriers and ensures learners get the support they need.
