"Staring at the sun is bad for you!"
This is usually this is what we are told when we are younger with not much detail to follow.

Solar retinopathy is the reason why!
Solar retinopathy is a condition caused by sun gazing or direct solar eclipse viewing with no protection of the eyes.

UV rays enter the eye, going through the pupil to the retina at the back of the eye, damaging the rods and cones of the retina creating a blind spot.

Similar to a sunburn, the damage occurs without any pain and the effects aren't noticed until a few hours after exposure.

Symptoms may include soreness, watery eyes, difficulty discerning shapes or details of objects, and a blind spot in the centre of your vision.

There’s no treatment for solar retinopathy, and in most cases the body will heal itself with time.

Children can develop cataracts too.
Children's eyes and brains are still developing until they're 8 or 10 years old.
That's why untreated cataracts can have serious, permanent effects on their vision.
